I am an Associate Professor & Reader in the Department of Computer Science and Digital Technologies, Faculty of Engineering and Environment.

I co-lead the Affective and Smart Computing Research Group with Prof Rebecca Strachan, which focuses on a wide range of machine learning, computer vision, medical imaging and data mining challenges and problems. Currently, I am also an Honorary Research Fellow in the School of Computer Science, University of Birmingham. Before this, I worked as a Senior Lecturer in Northumbria University, a Senior Lecturer in Teesside University, and a postdoctoral Research Fellow in the University of Birmingham. I received a Ph.D. degree from the School of Computer Science, at the University of Birmingham.

My research interests are in the field of machine learning, artificial intelligence, affective computing, and intelligent robotics.

Research topics that I’m interested in include:

  • Human robot interaction & robot vision
  • Facial and bodily expression recognition
  • Bioinformatics & medical imaging
  • Image understanding
  • Ensemble and deep learning
  • Speech recognition & emotion recognition in speech
  • Soft computing
