Exam Periods and Publication Dates

Northumbria University holds 3 major examinations periods during the Academic Calendar

  • Semester 1 (2 weeks January)
  • Semester 2 (3 weeks May)
  • Re-assessment (1 week in August)

These periods will apply to most taught programmes. However it should be noted that there are variances across the University in course dates and professional body requirements, especially on some programmes relating to healthcare education, teacher training and law. Therefore whilst examination activity does take place during most months of the calendar year only the major periods, as above, are published.

Exam Publication Dates

All students should therefore check their specific course detail for information on when examination activity is required to take place.

Details of all activity taking place during the major examination periods as set out in the table below will be uploaded to the NU Connect app for students to view by set publication dates.

Start times for examinations taking place within the UK will be 09:30am and 14:00pm unless otherwise stated. Examinations that also take place at overseas venues will normally be set for 09:30am in the UK so that differences in time zones can be accounted for.

Students who have examination activity outside of the major periods above may be informed of the timing and location details directly by their faculty or via the NU Connect app.

Important note: Students must ensure they are available for examinations on any date/time during major periods or an alternative date if this is a requirement stipulated by the faculty.

It is the responsibility of students to take great care to ensure that any forward planning in areas including travel, part time employment or attending events does not affect their availability to attend examinations as required.

Resit examination facilities for students resident outside the UK

Students who studied in the UK, and who are normally resident elsewhere, can request to resit examinations overseas.  Students will need to complete the “Overseas Registration Form – Exams”, and obtain agreement from the Overseas Venue, to host the examination. This venue should be a British Council or an approved institution.  All forms to be returned to by no later than 12th July 2019.

All costs associated with taking the examination overseas is payable by the individual candidate directly to the venue, this must be paid in advance (at least 10 workings days before the examination is due to take place).
