Newcastle is home to some incredible sports and equally as exciting teams. It is one of my favourite parts of the city and has become a weekly fixture into my routine while at Northumbria. 

I’ve listed three of the main sports to watch during your time at Northumbria. 

 

Sport: Football 

Team: Newcastle United 

Nickname: Magpies 

Why: Newcastle United play in the elite tier of English football, the most watched league in the world. Full of the biggest names in the world of football, you can catch the action at the 52,000-seater stadium St James Park. It really is a lifestyle to the Geordies and they love their team. The atmosphere in the ground on match day is something not to be missed! 

When: You will typically be able to watch the football at St James twice a month, below I’ve listed the last few home games of the current season;

  • Newcastle vs Southampton – 10th March 2018 
  • Newcastle vs Huddersfield Town – 31st March 2018
  • Newcastle vs Arsenal – 14th April 2018
  • Newcastle vs West Bromwich Albion – 28th April 2018•Newcastle vs Chelsea – 13th May 2018

Sport: Rugby 

Team: Newcastle Falcons 

Nickname: Falcons

Why: In the top tier of English rugby the Falcons are progressing well this season, with some notable wins against some of the best teams in the country. The ferocious pace of a rugby match is incredible and truly is an astonishing spectacle. Even for the neutral fan it is a great day out and is the perfect social outing with friends. 

When:

  • Newcastle Falcons vs Sale – 13th April 2018

Sport: Basketball 

Team: Esh Group Eagles Newcastle 

Nickname: The Eagles

Why: Basketball is growing in popularity in the UK, loved by many stateside – its popularity is booming here now. Tickets are relativity cheap to watch the Eagles and the standard is amazing, with extremely talented individuals playing in the team.

When:
