Immigration & Visas

Northumbria University is a Tier 4 sponsor approved by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI).  Being a Tier 4 sponsor means that Northumbria is fully authorised by the UK Government to sponsor Tier 4 (General) Student visas under the Points Based System. It also means that we carry out rigorous checks on things such as students' qualifications, English Language ability, immigration history, enrolment and course attendance to comply with the UKVI's regulations for educational sponsors. This level of compliance gives our international students the confidence that they are choosing a university which is recognised by the UK immigration authorities.

Most international applicants, who wish to take a full-time programme of study which is longer than 6 months, or a pre-sessional programme, need to obtain a Tier 4 (General) Student visa. The following groups may be exempt from this: 

  • Nationals of a country in the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland
  • British overseas territories citizens (unless you are from one of the sovereign base areas in Cyprus)
  • Commonwealth citizens with permission to enter or stay in the UK, who have at least one grandparent who was born in the UK
  • Students who have no time limit or conditions attached to their stay

English language requirements

In addition to the University English Language requirements, which are outlined here students requiring a CAS for their Tier 4 application must also achieve the standards set by UKVI.
