Study Abroad - Aron Fojtu

Name: Aron Fojtu

Degree: Business Management

Location(s): Iberoamericana University (Mexico)

Why did you decide to do study abroad?

I really like to travel, explore and experience other countries, its culture and especially its nature. Study abroad provides unique support and it made things easier for me to travel further in the world, cross the borders and try something new I have never experienced before.

Why did you decide to go to the university you went to?

My IBERO university in Mexico City offered us a unique program which allows international students to stay with local families and get to know the Mexican culture much better. Also, I could learn Spanish with intensive Spanish courses that run for free 8h a week, which is brilliant. And finally, it is a country outside Europe, another continent, allowing me to explore the differences and experience something completely new.

What was your stand out moment during study abroad?

I believe there is many. One of my personal highlights is the chance to explore the culture and nature while studying and also after. For example, right now, I am writing this from Chile, where we travelled with my roommate, exploring Patagonia national parks and amazing glaciers in Argentina.

Was it expensive to study abroad?

Not at all. It appears at first that it is when you need to buy your flight ticket, but living costs are lower in Mexico than in the UK. Therefore, what you would spend on your expenses back in the UK will perfectly cover your living costs in Mexico. This, of course, depends on your preferences and spendings but worked for me just fine.

Do you think your experience helped you in your studies at Northumbria and your career?

The thing is that I packed my stuff and left my comfort zone, not knowing the language and culture differences travelling to another continent. I took my chances and proved that I take action in order to achieve my goals and dreams. How many others can come to an interview after finishing their degree and say this, not too many I suppose? It is a great experience in so many different ways but it would take too long to talk about all. Therefore, after finishing my semester abroad I decided to set up a blog and share my experience with others, delivering more detailed information and an opportunity to message me with any questions. If you could offer some advice to students thinking of going on study abroad what would you say?

Don’t worry too much about it. We have a great ability to adapt and adjust to basically any environment. Experience it, enjoy it, live it.  And you will not regret it. What I would say in general, now you don’t have any limitations yet. You are young, flexible and in the majority of the cases, I believe without children and other responsibilities. Don’t waste this opportunity and go!
