Study Abroad - Rheanna Wilkinson

Name: Rheanna Wilkinson

Degree: Chemistry

Location(s): Universidade Estadual de Campinas (UNICAMP), Brazil

Why did you decide to apply?

It was easy to apply, I first thought, why not? The opportunity to travel and experience study in a different country and environment sounded very interesting, and the idea of meeting like-minded, intelligent people from all over the World that I was unlikely to meet otherwise sounded exciting.

How did you find the application process?

The application process was so easy, that it almost seemed too good to be true. Alejandra (International Partnerships Manager) was a great support for any questions and queries, she was so quick to reply, and provide responses as to who had received the opportunity were provided quickly in order to prepare.

What was the best part of your experience?

Where to start! The lectures, university, equipment and teaching methods were so different that was a great thing to experience.  The best thing I took from the experience however is possibly the links all around the World I made with peers and lecturers.

Did you find your experience rewarding?

The experience was greatly rewarding.  The independence allowed in all aspects of the trip were great, and I really feel it set me in good stead for potentially studying or travelling abroad for work.

Did you experience any difficulties?

Honestly, no!

Is the Santander programme helpful? How? Would you recommend it to other researchers?

The programme was very helpful, and not just for the obvious reasons.  The confidence and determination the experience gave me were invaluable and I would never have been able to go without the Santander grant.

What additional activities did you do on your trip?

Myself and another student added a little of our own money and flew first to Rio.  We spent three nights there exploring the city and culture.  During the time spent in Sao Paolo, the university and lecturers themselves arranged many extra curricular activities including watching the sunset, going on nights out and watching the World Cup England vs Columbia game.

What are your plans for the future?

The trip has certainly opened my eyes to the possibility of working abroad, and given me the confidence in myself to apply and know I can do it.

If you could offer some advice to other applicants what would you say?

My only advice would be make sure you apply for it!  It was an incredible opportunity for personal growth and invaluable experience for myself.  It isn't often in life you get an opportunity like this, so grab it with both hands!
