Overview of Doctoral Research

Planning practices of athletics coaches

Karen’s doctoral research is exploring how athletics coaches approach the task of planning an annual training schedule for their athletes. Planning is a central feature in most coach education programmes yet there has been limited research to date on the process of planning within athletics. The research explores the what, how, when and why of athletics coaches’ approach the task of planning and what they are planning for. The longitudinal research design, involves working with 28 track and field coaches over the duration of a full athletics competition year. The future goal for the research is to ensure that it has practical application to coaches and that it will have the potential to change practice at a delivery level as well as in coach education and professional development.
