BiographyVincent Deary is a senior lecturer in health psychology. He is also a practitioner health psychologist and a practicing cognitive behavioural therapist. His research work draws upon his clinical experience to develop new psychosocial interventions for physical and emotional health complaints. He is founder member of the Northern Association for Persistent Physical Symptoms, a clinical network aimed at supporting the care of people with long term physical symptoms.
Research Themes and Scholarly InterestsVincent was awarded a personal MRC Fellowship in 2006 to develop an intervention for medically unexplained voice disorders. Current projects include: a four year NIHR funded study to develop an intervention for fear of falling in the elderly; an NIHR funded study to look at the development of new psychosocial and nutritional interventions in head and neck cancer survivors; with a team of collaborators from Aberdeen University, a CSO grant to undertake a feasibility study to train GPs in dealing with medically unexplained symptoms. He is also part of the mentorship and research design team of two fellowships: an Arthritis Research UK fellowship to develop a new psychosocial intervention for Sjogren’s Disease and a NIHR fellowship to design a new Cognitive Behavioural Therapy intervention for dysphagia in cancer survivors. He is also working on new interventions for chronic cough and snoring.
