Elevator Pitch

Centrefold uses animation and documentary techniques to explore what is often a taboo subject – the cutting of female genitals.

Over the past decade, female genital cosmetic surgery has increased by a staggering 500%. Centrefold is a unique animated documentary that takes an innovative and balanced approach to this controversial topic. Created by award winning filmmaker Ellie Land and funded by the Wellcome Trust, the film follows three women, aged 24 -41 through their different experiences of labiaplasty (surgery to trim or remove the labia).

What We Did

Land examined and discussed with Creighton and Liao’s their research on labiasurgery, before interviewing a number of UK women about their experience and reasons for having labiasurgery. The interviews were then edited into narrative that reflected the varying opinions and outcomes of surgery the women experienced. Then an animatic was created (a storyboard timed to the interviews) by Land to illustrate the main themes the film is concerned with – consumerism, body perfection and questions of normality. The character and backgrounds were designed by Land with the actual animation being created by a few animators and compositors.

Who will benefit

Medical Community including G.P’s and other researchers. People interested to learn more about labia surgery.
