Personhood in Dementia

Dr. Jayne Wallace

Co-Investigators: Made in collaboration with James Thomas, Daniel Jackson, Dr Karim Ladha, Dr John Shearer and Patrick Olivier - Newcastle University.

This body of work focuses on the maintenance of self-identity in dementia.

With the development of new treatments and earlier diagnosis we now live in a time where the person with dementia is able to be their own vocal advocate and, rather than being ignored, increasingly contribute to research processes (Harris & Keady, 2004). Shifts in clinical and research perspectives on dementia, and the role of the person who is living with dementia, support our approach of involving someone deeply within the research process.

We have worked with individuals living with mild stages of dementia and their close family members to make a series of digital jewellery objects that echo elements of their life stories and treasured relationships and experiences.
