Pregnancy

(see also: Sexual Health)

If you think you may be pregnant there are a range of services both within the University and in the local community available to support you. You can get a free pregnancy test from your GP. There are other local organisations which provide free pregnancy testing for young people, such as ‘Streetwise’ (35-37 The Groat Market in Newcastle, Tel; 0191 230 5400). In addition, many different brands of pregnancy testing kits are available to purchase over the counter in chemists/large stores.

If you find that you are pregnant, Streetwise also offer a counselling service to help you consider the best options for you. You can also make an appointment with the University’s Counselling & Mental Health Support Team if you wish.

If you decide to go ahead with the pregnancy, this will obviously impact on your studies and you will need to discuss issues such as taking time out with your Programme Leader and/or Guidance Tutor.

This change in your circumstances will almost certainly affect your financial situation, including any student loan, bursary or funding you receive. It is, therefore, important to seek early advice about welfare and benefits issues from an Adviser in Welfare & International Support, Student Support and Wellbeing.
