About this course

This flexible, part-time programme offers experienced health or social care professionals the opportunity to develop the ability to lead and evaluate practice.

It begins by building on your ability to analyse the evidence on which your practice is based, and as the programme progresses, you will have opportunity to practice your skills of critical reflection including self-reflection, reflections about your practice environment and reflections about how your organisation operates.

You will have the opportunity to identify real-world issues to explore, discuss the issues with others, investigate potential explanations and solutions, use contemporary evidence to enhance your understanding and provide clear justifications for your decisions.

By undertaking this programme, you will develop knowledge and skills which are key to your personal and professional development, these include; discipline specific knowledge, critical reflective thinking, an understanding of change management and leadership and an ability to identify and justify new ways of working.

We have worked closely with students to develop this new degree programme which focuses on current healthcare agendas whilst encouraging you to develop lifelong learning skills and the ability to lead and manage improvements to health and social care provision.

Designed by a multi-professional team including; nurses, midwives, social care professionals and medical practitioners Northumbria University’s range of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is tailored to support individuals to develop the knowledge, skills, ability and confidence to drive practice forward.

The BSc (Hons) Developing practice and leading change in health is an example of the type of CPD available, this programmes builds on the strengths of previous award-winning* programmes and remains flexible and responsive to your individual learning needs.

We have excellent relationships with partner services in health, social care and social work and our range of CPD provision supports practitioners and managers to engage in professional learning and then examine how this can be integrated in the practice arena.

Teaching and Assessment

The programme has a blended learning format, which provides you with the flexibility to work at times convenient to you whilst being supported by experienced teachers who are experts in their discipline, and a wealth of resources designed to help you learn.

This level 6 programme runs over 2 academic years and consists of 4 X 20 credit modules followed by a 40 credit dissertation module. During the programme, you will learn through a variety of approaches including seminars, workshops, use of technology enhanced learning, group and individual tutorials. These are all designed to;

•    Challenge and improve your knowledge base relating to your professional role to enhance your opportunity for career development

•    Develop your critical thinking skills and research awareness.

•    Develop your ability to use IT through technology enhanced learning.

•    Encourage authentic learning by critically reflecting on real life issues

•    Improve your performance by providing high quality feedback

•    Improve your leadership skills

•    Enable you to contribute to a system of continuous improvement within your professional role

This programme has a variety of assessment opportunities which are designed to help you learn, and to explore how you learn. In line with the programme and module learning outcomes, module assessments will facilitate you to choose an appropriate focus for your developing work; this ensures that the knowledge and skills you develop whilst undertaking the assessment is meaningful for you and will help you achieve your personal and professional goals. Types of module assessments include; development of a learning resource, development of an e-poster, critical written discussions including an extended study articulating your ability to develop, manage and lead change in your practice area. You will showcase your learning and house your assessment in an e-portfolio. Your e-portfolio will be assessed formatively as you work your way through each module (giving you opportunity to revise and refine your work) and summatively at the end of each module.

Throughout your programme, you will be encouraged to play an active part in a ‘learning community’ (comprising other students and teachers). Talking to others within the learning community will support you to develop evidence about ‘how’ and ‘what’ you have learned during each module and forms an important source of formative feedback to help you further develop your work.  Evidence relating to ‘how’ you have learned (including action planning) is an essential part of the assessment for each module.
