About this course

This CPD module is designed for practitioners working with individuals who suffer from chronic heart failure.

You will have the opportunity to advance and develop your knowledge and skills in the ongoing support and management of patients suffering from heart failure, with an emphasis on left ventricular systolic dysfunction. After completing the module, you will be able to demonstrate the ability to offer ongoing advice and support to patients, make autonomous decisions, communicate effectively and ensure the timely referral of patients to senior members of the multi-disciplinary team.

Teaching and Assessment

The module will be delivered through a combination of guided study, structured lectures, seminars and problem solving exercises. The module is enhanced through online materials and various websites, with contributions from visiting speakers, regarded as experts in their particular fields.

You will be required to produce a critically reflective clinical portfolio, in which you will produce evidence of the achievement of specified clinical competencies. You will create your portfolio in collaboration with clinical experts and it will reflect the competencies’ identified within the National Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) Competency Framework (Skills for Health 2005).

  • Pathophysiology of heart failure
  • Epidemiology of heart failure
  • Aetiology and classification of heart failure
  • Diastolic and systolic dysfunction
  • Signs and symptoms of heart failure linking to clinical skills
  • Diagnostic testing
  • Introduction to rhythm/ECG analysis
  • Principles of acute management
  • Principles of chronic management
  • Patient and carer empowerment/education/concordance
  • Holistic aspects of care
  • Interventions e.g. biventricular pacing, implantable defibrillators, ventricular assistance devices, cardiac transplantation
  • Ethical aspects of care
  • Principles of rehabilitation in heart failure
  • Supportive/palliative care

Previous evidence of level 5 study.

  1. Compose evidence to demonstrate a deep knowledge of the manifestation and physical and psychological consequence of heart failure
  2. Critically assess the ongoing health care needs of an individual suffering from heart failure
  3. Construct a clinical portfolio, which contains evidence of achievement of clinical competencies pertaining to the National Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) Competency Framework (Skills for Health 2005)
  4. Critically reflect upon practice regarding the care and management of individuals suffering from heart failure, with relation to national guide lines and evidenced based practice
