This qualification covers the essential models and theories relating to coaching and mentoring, and is ideal for managers, team leaders and supervisors with significant responsibility for coaching and mentoring as part of their day to day role. 

The learning approach adopted on this programme is blended learning. The programme runs over a 4-month period from March to July 2020. Participants will be engaged in learning through:

• Interacting with others in their learning group through discussions, activities, practice sessions and tutor input on the 3 full day workshops (6 March, 8 May and 10 July 2020)

• Completing individual learning activities such as guided reading, practice and reflection via our virtual learning platform.

• Completing 2 written assignments:

- reflecting on their practice as a coach or mentor (June submission)

- reviewing the coaching or mentoring practice in their organisation (August submission)

Leadership and Management


The programme is delivered by two qualified and experienced practising coaches, who are also engaged in training, development and education.

Tim Relton and Angelique Toit, both experienced coaches and mentors, and deliver teaching routinely as ALs for LHRM.

The course is delivered in the fourth floor ‘Corporate and Executive’ suite of the award winning Newcastle Business School at Northumbria University. 

We offer a rare opportunity to gain CMI level coaching and mentoring skills course in a blended learning environment, with the face to face programme sessions adequately spaced to allow for reflective learning and feedback. We have a strong and experienced faculty of coaching and mentoring experts, with long track records of teaching and coaching across a wide range of industries.

This course has three mandatory units:

5014V1: Introduction to Management Coaching and Mentoring 

5017V1: Coaching Practice and Theory

5018V1: Mentoring Practice and Theory






• Understand the concept and purpose of management coaching and mentoring 

• Determine the use of management coaching and mentoring as a tool in human resources development 

• Understand the relationship between coaching and mentoring and organisational objectives 

• Understand tools and techniques used in coaching and mentoring practice

• Understand the need to develop relationship to support coaching and mentoring practice

• Understand guidelines and protocols for intervention and the need to develop coaching and mentoring interventions to meet organisational requirements
