The accredited NEBOSH National Construction Certificate is a leading H&S qualification that covers the fundamental legal requirements relating to health and safety in construction work in the UK. It is aimed at managers and supervisors that have the responsibility of keeping their colleagues safe, and is also advantageous for aspiring H&S advisors and for those who want to enhance their careers in the construction industry.

Students that enrol onto the Certificate in Construction who have previously completed the Certificate in Occupational health and safety don’t need to sit the NGC1 module as it is a common module throughout the two qualifications; this means that those students will be able to have a £500 reduction, but also start the qualification at the next intake point.

If your day-to-day responsibilities include activities that come under the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015, this Certificate will help you ensure that people are working safely.

The NEBOSH National Construction Certificate is a widely recognised and respected qualification and will consist of three units:

(NGC1) Management of Health and Safety

  • Foundations in health and safety
  • Health and safety management systems- Plan
  • Health and safety management systems- Do
  • Health and safety management systems- Check

Distance Learning Route:

From our many years of experience of delivering NEBOSH courses we recognise that some potential delegates are simply not able to attend every week. So, for those who would like a more flexible approach, we have developed a route that allows you to do the main bulk of studying at home, yet still provides extensive tutor support. This Distance Learning course is available to those students who are willing to travel to the Northumbria University campus in Newcastle for the exam and assessment at the end of the course. Each topic has an assignment to be completed by a specified date: these are based on past NEBOSH questions, giving you valuable experience of answering this type of question, as well as providing motivation and structure to your studies. Feedback is provided by the course tutor. We provide additional support in special face-to-face sessions at the University.

The intake points for both of the aforementioned qualifications are as follows:

  • January
  • May
  • September

So for the intake this year, any students who have previously completed the NGC1 will start in September rather than May.

Learn from the Best

The course will be delivered by highly skilled and experienced professionals, approved by NEBOSH (the National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health).

Teaching and Assessment

As a distance learner, you’ll be provided with a copy of the course text as well as access to our eLearning Portal that contains a wealth of relevant material and sample exam questions. You’ll also be given access to Northumbria’s IT and library systems, allowing you to use resources such as electronic journals, databases and software. Feedback is provided by the course tutor and we provide additional support in special face-to-face sessions at the University.

Assessments include written examinations administered by NEBOSH, which must be taken at the University. There is also a requirement to write a short report based on a practical health and safety inspection. A typical report will identify potential hazards, outline the reasons for taking action (including reference to possible breaches of legislation), and set out remedial measures that could be implemented.

Give Your Career an Edge

Many larger construction companies incorporate the NEBOSH Certificate within their training programmes for managers and supervisors. They know that safety cultures become stronger when all line managers have a sound understanding of the principles of risk management. Smaller companies also value the qualification, which helps them meet the requirements of clients and principal contractors when working as sub-contractors.

Holders of the National Construction Certificate are entitled to Associate Membership (AIOSH) of the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH). The qualification also meets the academic requirements for Technical Membership (Tech IOSH) of IOSH and Associate Membership (AIIRSM) of the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM).

The NEBOSH National Certificate in Construction Health and Safety meets the headline entrance criteria requirements for Construction Safety Associate membership (AaPS) of the Association for Project Safety (APS).

Holders of both the NEBOSH National or International Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety and the NEBOSH National Certificate in Construction Health and Safety meet the headline entrance criteria requirements for Registered Membership (RMaPS) of the Association for Project Safety (APS).

Your Future

The Certificate represents an early step towards a career in health and safety. It’s a Level 3 qualification that provides a sound basis for studying further NEBOSH qualifications. These include the NEBOSH Diploma in Occupational Safety and Health, which can be achieved through courses offered by Northumbria University on a part-time or distance learning basis.

Units NGC1 and NCC1 will each consist of a 2 hour written exam with ten short answer questions (8 marks each) and one long answer question (20 marks)

The practical examination will include a safety inspection of a workplace, identifying common hazards and deciding whether they are adequately controlled. If necessary, suggestions of appropriate and cost effective control measures will be put in place.
