About this course

This course is an open Continuing Professional Development course. In order to book, please follow the booking link, or if not available, fill out the enquiry form and a member of staff will be in touch with you shortly.

This CPD module is targeted at healthcare professionals (both medically-trained and support staff) who need to have an understanding of statistics within their role. The course will equip you to interpret data for management decisions, translate results for patients, and understand what any data you’re looking at actually means.

Northumbria is the only university in the north of England to offer CPD of this kind.

Attendees will be sent an article to appraise and submit before they attend the course. This will enable us to determine your current levels of understanding, and pitch the course at the right level to maximise your learning outcomes.

Lecture notes will also be sent out in advance, to help you get the most from the course.

We will use practical examples, real life case studies, real data and published studies throughout the course, to make it easy for you to apply your learning when you return to work.

Learn from the Best

The main staff member who will teach the course is Prof Ngianga-Bakwin Kandala. Prior to his position at Northumbria, he worked as Head of the Health Economics and Evidence Synthesis Research Unit at the Luxembourg Institute of Health, and was an Associate Professor in Health Technology Assessment, a joint appointment with the University of Oxford and the University of Warwick.

Prof Kandala previously ran a similar CPD module at the University of Warwick, and has incorporated the expertise of other Northumbria University staff to enhance the course:

Teaching and Assessment

We deliver the course using a combination of lectures and seminars, based around practical real life examples. There is no formal assessment.

Learning Environment

The course will be delivered in a classroom environment on Northumbria’s City Campus.

The physical space of our City Campus – with its award-winning architecture and modern teaching buildings – creates an environment that encourages learning and self-development. It is easily accessible by road and public transport, in the heart of Newcastle city centre.

Your Future

You will learn new skills in interpreting data, and become confident in assessing true value. This will equip you to make important decisions in all aspects of your career.
