HA7010 - Developing Academic Scholarship for Learning and Teaching

What will I learn on this module?

The UKPSF is fully aligned to the Academic Professional Higher Apprenticeship Standard and as such, the related Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours (KSBs) that will be explored in this module are set out in appendix 2 of the Module Handbooks.

Undertaking this module will support you to extend your academic practice and enrich your OneDrive Professional Development Portfolio. This will assist you to demonstrate your skills, knowledge and the key competencies involved in working towards meeting the UKPSF requirements for Higher Education Academy Fellowship Descriptor 2 (D2) whilst evaluating your own practice.

You will have the opportunity to build on your learning that occurred in Module 1 ‘Introduction to the Student Experience, Learning & Teaching’, contextualising this within your own discipline and your own practice as an academic professional. The content of this module is focussed around the evaluation and enhancement of your own teaching and learning activities. You will be introduced to a range of methods for the evaluation of practice and consider their implications for assuring quality and enhancement within your own teaching practice. You will develop a critical understanding of pedagogical research scholarship which informs the evaluation of teaching, learning and assessment and how this contributes to high quality student learning and enhancement.

In this module, you will be supported to develop an enquiry based enhancement Practitioner Enquiry Based Research Project which will be assessed via a presentation of 25 minutes to your peers and assessors (Programme Team) to confidently support current and future scholarship activities both in your specific discipline and in a wider higher education context. This Practitioner Enquiry Based Research Project will also provide evidence / case study to refer to in Module 3 Reflective Essay.

How will I learn on this module?

You will learn in a wide variety of ways on this module. You will have a structured programme of lectures, seminars, directed and independent learning opportunities. This will provide you with an opportunity to discuss and develop your thinking; group discussions will help you to consider how others view the key ideas and concepts of this module and other areas of the programme. You will also work with your peers and tutors to complete specific learning activities for your OneDrive Professional Development Portfolio, as well as working together in writing groups.

Your Academic Guidance Mentor (AGM) will take a key role in supporting you to develop reflections on your own practice which will inform your Practitioner Enquiry Based Research Project design. This support will be in the form of scheduled meetings and group tutorials during the module. Throughout the module, you will be encouraged to engage in critical discourse around educational practice within an academic community of enquiry, which will underpin the module.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

In addition to the pastoral support you will receive, the module leader involved in delivering this module will provide guidance and academic counselling to ensure that you are able to confidently engage with the academic rigour of this module. This dialogue will be face to face in lectures, seminars, workshops and group / individual tutorials and is an essential aspect of the programme assessment for learning strategy. Extensive support is also accessible online as part of the University’s commitment to technology enhanced learning. This employs the use of Blackboard, EMA, OneDrive, Digital Reading lists, digital communication, social networking and collaborative tools.

Your AGM will be your current module leader who will guide you on professional and academic matters to ensure your progression.
They will attend all of the meetings with your L&TM and discuss your Professional Practice Observation of Teaching with you. As well as your progress against the Areas of Activity from the UKPSF and support the continuous development of the Professional Development Portfolio.

Your LTM will be allocated to you by your Line Manager from your workplace setting

Your LTM will hold bimonthly meetings with you and together you will engage in one Professional Practice Peer Observation per semester/module. You will record these interactions on provided proforma that becomes evidence to upload to your Professional Development Portfolio.

• Adding to the OneDrive Professional Development Portfolio begun in Module 1 including Completed L&T Plan in relation to UKPSF (ongoing completion in relation to the requirements of module 2 and building on UKPSF required for recognition as Fellow).
• Engagement in a Professional Practice Observation of Teaching Observation and completed tutorial reflections


Summative assessment
• A discipline specific Practitioner Enquiry Based Research Project Presentation of 20 minutes. This will be professionally presented using TEL to the assessment panel and peers as a mini conference to share and disseminate ideas.

Module abstract

During this module, you will be given the opportunity to develop your academic professional knowledge, skills and behaviours that are fully aligned to the areas of activity, core knowledge and professional values of the Advance HEs UK Professional Standards Framework UKPSF and will support you in your progression towards Descriptor 2 (D2) Fellow of the HEA, which will be consolidated in module 3 ‘Enhancing Academic Practice through Pedagogic Research’.
The module builds on pedagogical theories and practical applications that you were introduced to in module 1, and encourages you to reflect upon these in relation to your own subject discipline, and in relation to the enhancement of your own practice. A core feature of the module is to introduce you to quality assurance and enhancement within your own practice as an academic professional and in wider HE contexts. You will be introduced to a range of Teaching Quality Enhancement examples from colleagues within the sector. The module develops your knowledge and skills as a researcher and allows you to explore and propose a Practitioner Enquiry Based Research Project related to evaluation and enhancement of your teaching and learning activities. You will be encouraged to further develop your Professional Development Portfolio of critically appraised evidence and develop a critically reflexive approach to your ongoing professional development and practice in higher education.

You will be introduced to pedagogic enquiry and practitioner based research practices and approaches to support the development of your own Practitioner Enquiry Based Research Project which will be presented to the cohort to share your emerging excellent practice.
