What will I learn on this module?

You will participate in a live project or set brief and learn how to deliver a solution to professional standards. In the process you will gain greater experience of collaborative working either through playing a key role in a team, working co-operatively with others or through co-designing a solution with end users.

How will I learn on this module?

This is a problem-based learning activity in which you will be expected to create a response to a complex issue. You will learn through a series of lectures, seminar groups and workshops aimed at helping you analyse the problem and create appropriate design solutions. Moreover, this module is usually a team-based activity so learning with and from your peers is an important part of how you will learn during this module.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

Tutor led studio-based classes will support you to learn or improve new ways of researching, conceiving concepts, developing ideas and presenting your prototypes and supporting documentation.

What will I be expected to achieve?

Knowledge & Understanding:
Independently plan, organise and manage effective research and development in order to acquire new practical or professional knowledge of a self-determined or selected project. KU4

Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:
To conceive design creative concepts to complex design problems and issues. IP1
Exercise reflective and critical self-analysis in the evaluation of personal and/or team progress. IP3
To effectively communicate and present design solutions to professional standards. IP4

Demonstrate a clear understanding of cultural and contemporary design issues. PV1

How will I be assessed?

This module will be 100% summatively assessed at the end of the module through portfolio submission.

You will be assessed on the submission of the following portfolio elements:

1. A design document (KU01, PVA01)
2. A working prototype or demonstration (IPSA01, IPSA02)
3. A reflective summary including peer evaluation where applicable (IPSA03)

Formative feedback will be given throughout the module culminating in a final presentation prior to final portfolio submission.

Formative feedback will be given verbally, whereas summative assessment will be written, giving a marks breakdown of how the submission met the five individual learning outcomes.

Module abstract

This module gives you the opportunity to undertake one of a number of collaborative, live or competition briefs, allowing you to creatively engage with issues relating to the designer’s widening role in society, culture and technology.

In addition, your tutor may give you the option to continue with a project started in Collaboration & Professional Associations 01. This usually happens when there is a live brief that would benefit from further enhancement or resolution in semester 02.

This module expects you to work cooperatively, collaboratively, or in a co-design situation to deliver a professional standard answers or solutions to often complex design problems.

This module values your ability to collaborate and work professionally as much as your ability to deliver a creative and well craft design solution.
