What will I learn on this module?

The aim of the first part of this module is to enable you to further develop the practical and theoretical skills you learned in previous modules. You will be introduced to 2D and 3D motion analysis and will explore kinematic and kinetic data collection and analysis. You will assess the biomechanical factors that contribute to performance and profiling and discuss, and evaluate, the use of motion analysis for the assessment of human movement in sport, health and exercise.

In the second part of the module, you will explore a range of methods of assessment for assessing both clinical and healthy populations. In particular you will discuss and evaluate the use of appropriate methods for assessment of muscular performance and then evaluate the methods used for clinical gait and postural control analysis. You will develop your practical skills and learn to use advanced kinematic and kinetic analysis protocols.

In addition, this module aims to develop your appreciation of scientific rigour and evaluate the limitations of the data when using a range of biomechanical assessment tools, and appreciate the need for reliability and validity in data collection.

You will cover a range of topics from the following:
- 2D video data collection and analysis using Vicon Motus.
- 3D motion analysis (Vicon)
- Projectiles
- Force
- Surface electromyography
- Clinical gait analysis
- Clinical postural control data collection and analysis.

How will I learn on this module?

This module will facilitate your learning through formal, but interactive, lectures which provide the main theoretical and conceptual information. Laboratory based sessions will be the main method of delivery in this module with the emphasis on small-group interactive practical sessions with a strong emphasis on data collection and discussion of methods and data. Seminars will also take place in support of the assessment.

The concepts of data collection and analysis (e.g. 2D motion analysis, surface electromyography, force platforms) will be explored in laboratory workshops that will provide you with the opportunity to discuss data collection, analysis and interpretation of results.

The module comprises taught sessions supported by both directed and independent preparation for the assessment which will involve you in data collection, and analysis, and preparation for a seen case study exam.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

During the first week, you will be introduced to the module, and its’ administrative procedures and assessment requirements.

Support materials for sessions will be available to you on the eLP; including the lecture slides, suggested reading, access to journal articles and online materials, and other useful resources such as a discussion board. For further support on taught sessions you can access the tutors for one-to-one discussions and tutorials via the online tutorial booking system.

Formative preparation for the seen case study exam will be given via a lecture and seminar by the module leader.

Written feedback will be provided for summative assessments. A generic feedback session will take place for the assessment, and generic feedback from previous years will also be made available on the eLP.

You will receive formative and summative feedback on submitted work, and will have the opportunity to discuss any concerns you may have with the module tutor.

There is also comprehensive help available in the university library on a wide range of generic academic topics such as: academic writing, statistics, report writing, referencing, and how to hone your presentation skills.

Knowledge & Understanding:
On successful completion of the module you will be able to:
1. analyse and apply knowledge of biomechanical factors that contribute to performance and profiling;
2. appropriately analyse and apply a range of evidence based assessment and intervention strategies in Biomechanics;
3. successfully apply your knowledge of research paradigms and methods of acquiring, analysing and interpreting data in sport and exercise science.

Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:
On successful completion of the module you will be able to:

1 work independently to undertake an independent project using a variety of IT and 2D data analysis software and be able to communicate your results to a range of audiences.

1 demonstrate critical and questioning thinking and have high professional and ethical standards when working with diverse populations.

How will I be assessed?

At the end of the module, you will be required to sit a seen case study exam. The case study will comprise a set of biomechanical data relevant to the module. The exam will enable you to demonstrate your understanding of how the biomechanical data would have been collected, as well as requiring you to interpret the data in relation to biomechanical principles. The seen case study exam will comprise a combination of multiple choice and short answer questions.

The seen case study exam comprises 100% of the assessment, and covers all the MLOs.

Formative feedback will be ongoing during laboratory sessions and during discussion sessions where you will critique the available literature pertinent to the given topic.

Module abstract

Have you ever wondered how we humans perform, move or suffer injuries? This module will focus on exploring human movement science in a range of sporting and clinical scenarios using biomechanical principles. The module will enable you to assess human movement from a theoretical perspective, gain first hand practical experience of data collection and advanced technological skills in data collection and interpretation and relevant research.
