How will I learn on this module?

You will learn through a mixture of lectures, extensive group based projects, practical case studies, workshops, fieldwork and directed independent learning. In the first seven weeks a series of lectures and practical case studies will introduce you to the concept of sustainable development, the process of planning and development control and how development can impact on the environment: air, water, land, biodiversity and people.

You will then learn how these ideas work in practice by applying them to two extensive practical case studies, each study will run for seven+ weeks. You will be introduced to a range of tools and techniques for surveying sites and consider how development can be more sustainable, working as a team you will lean how to collect data, review options and produce justified proposals. Formative feedback will be provided in regular case study workshops and via project group meetings.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

Support will include face-to-face group feedback during the practical workshops and case studies. You will have an opportunity to discuss how you are undertaking your redevelopment proposals and developing a sustainability strategy for Newcastle and get direct feedback on your ideas.

Support will also be provided by the module eLP site. On line resources include interactive reading lists and links to practical examples and case studies.

What will I be expected to achieve?

Knowledge & Understanding:
• MLO 1: To gain an understanding of sustainability and sustainable development and how these ideas can influence new developments.
• MLO 2: To develop a practical understanding of how planning and geographical/environmental issues can impact on new development.

Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:
• MLO 3: The ability to work as a cross disciplinary team to develop justified proposals and defend these.
• MLO 4: To apply a range of practical tools to assess possible development sites and design a new development.

• MLO 5: Explain how sustainability and environmental issues relate to developments.

How will I be assessed?

In Semester 1 you will undertake a group sustainable city proposal. You will be required to collect data about the city of Newcastle upon Tyne and its current sustainability. Using this information you will determine how sustainable the city currently is and develop a plan for a better and more sustainable Newcastle. Assessment 1 is worth 50% of the module marks, it will take the form of a public presentation and defence of your proposed group sustainable design scheme (All MLOs apply*).

In Semester 2 you will work in small groups (3 or 4 students) producing a sustainable development plan for a local site. You will undertake a survey of part of Newcastle, review the suitability of sites in this area for re-development, and produce an individual sustainable development proposals for your chosen site. Assessment 2 will take the form of an individual report and linked group poster which argues the case as to the suitability of the chosen location and sustainability of the proposed new development. It is worth 50% of the module marks (ALL MLOs apply*).
* Note the two assessment will test different aspects of the MLOs.
Formative feedback on the developing assessments will be provided via weekly seminars/group discussion.





Module abstract

There is an increasing demand for new developments in Britain. An increasing population and changing lifestyles means that in the next few years we will need to build many more new homes, roads etc. But where should we located these new developments, how can we assess the impacts of these new developments on people and the local environment? How can we determine if such developments are sustainable?

In this module you will explore the range of factors that determine whether development is sustainable, from energy to quality of life of local people, from waste to biodiversity. This is a practical module and you will find out how these issues input into local planning and site development. You will have the opportunity to go out and assess the sustainability of new developments and develop a practical grounding to enable you to go onto a degree in the built or natural/geographical environments.
