What will I learn on this module?

You will learn to develop the ability to apply appropriate techniques to the solution of a wide range of problems involving powertrain development that includes engine, transmission, and driveline. You will learn how to model and design engines, transmissions, hybrid and electrical drive systems, fuel cell systems in relation to their interfaces with chassis systems.

How will I learn on this module?

This module discusses the main technologies and their future trends concerning the automotive powertrain systems. Both the traditional and newly emerging technologies will be covered. By combining the lectures and laboratory sessions in practical powertrain development, you will have the chance to extend and challenge your theoretical knowledge and acquired perspectives by seeing these applied within this active learning environment. The lectures will be used to transfer knowledge and direct your further work while the seminars and workshops will offer you the opportunity to discuss your work, to practice with the software and to solve problems while receiving direct guidance form the tutors to allow you to reflect on your learning so that you can feed this forward to the assessments. Independent learning will be an important part of the module and will assist you in developing your skills as an engineering practitioner by using what you learn in the module to set up your own direction as you seek additional support for the learning.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

In addition to direct contact with the module team during lectures, seminars and laboratories you are encouraged to develop your curiosity by making direct contact with the module team either via email or the open door approach operated throughout the programme. You will be supported by the module team through various systems which will help you make contact with staff. You will find that staff are always available to you within the timetables contact sessions, lectures, labs, seminars, etc but you are also able to initiate contact by accessing their office, or emailing them to arrange a meeting to enable you to initiate discussion on the subject area from your perspective.

You will also be regularly referred to supporting resources including relevant texts, student software downloads and relevant multimedia materials which you can access at your leisure to consolidate and explore the academic content of the module. References to these resources will be made available through the e-learning portal and in lectures and seminars.

1. Explain current state of automotive powertrains and their integration in vehicles
2. Analyse Transmission: Transmission/driveline modelling; Transmission control for gear shifting

3. Solve various aspects of engine system
4. Critically evaluate the theory for the control of different electric machines, and be able to apply this in the design of common drive systems

Module abstract

This module discusses the main technologies and their future trends concerning the automotive powertrain systems. The topics will cover the internal combustion engine, hybrid system, transmission, alternative fuel, fuel cell, emission and aftertreatment. Both the traditional and newly emerging technologies will be covered. The module is intended to relate and develop your knowledge and understanding of fundamental engineering principles and theory to the field of vehicle powertrain and chassis systems. You will learn about advanced research methods for the experimental validation and modelling of powertrain systems and then apply those methods to evaluate the performance and efficiency of a representative powertrain system through the use of the Automotive Engineering laboratory facilities and through the use of industry-standard software. By combining the lectures and laboratory sessions in practical powertrain development you will have a chance to extend your knowledge and perspectives.
