What will I learn on this module?

You will learn about and demonstrate how to apply the knowledge and skills developed earlier in your degree programme whilst also extending your independent learning through a deep investigation of a topic, which may be of your own choice. You will develop your ability to plan, direct, progress and take responsibility for your own large scale investigative project.
You may be involved in the choice of the topic of your investigation and also be able to lead the direction of the investigation under the guidance of a supervisor. Your investigation will draw upon a broad range of existing engineering knowledge and practice, apply advanced engineering techniques, allow you to draw your own conclusions supported by your findings and enable you to present your results in a professional manner.

How will I learn on this module?

This module will give you the opportunity to learn through the experience of undertaking a large scale investigation under guidance of an academic supervisor. As you will be responsible for the overall direction of your project you be able to practice your independent learning skills and continue learning how to manage and assess your own abilities whilst also developing your specific knowledge of an area of engineering.
Your investigation will require you to be aware of, and manage, your own progress towards demonstrating the module learning outcomes. You will undertake learning activities that allow you to identify opportunities to develop your knowledge and skills in areas which may directly relate to your plans for future employment.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

The investigative project is undertaken as described by the module tutor and within a guiding framework of academic supervision A framework of a small number of supporting lectures, electronic resources and structured course work assessments to guide your individual investigation. You will be required to inform your supervisor of progress on a weekly basis and to submit the staged course work to enable your academic supervisor to monitor your progress and support your learning.

Knowledge & Understanding:

MLO1 Identify, apply and critically record the performance of complex engineering systems through the creative use of analytical methods and/or modelling techniques to establish innovative solutions

MLO2 Critically demonstrate the ability to plan and manage independent work to undertake a significant technical investigation within a predefined time scale.
MLO3 Comprehensively conduct a technical literature review appropriate to the problem statement and use this to define an experimental and/or explorative programme of work.

Personal Values Attributes (Global / Cultural awareness, Ethics, Curiosity) (PVA):

MLO4 Define and systematically investigate a problem and identify constraints, including environmental, risk and ethical issues, drawing on wider knowledge as appropriate.
MLO5 Present a critical analysis, justifiable conclusions and a reflection upon an investigation in the form of a technical report, reflective summary and poster.

How will I be assessed?

Formative Feedback
Formative feedback will be provided to you during regular supervisory contact with a member of academic staff assigned to you by the module tutor. Digital written formal feedback will be provided to you on your ‘Interim Investigative Project Report’ to inform your subsequent work and your ‘Final Investigative Project Report’. Formative feedback will also be provided to you by your supervisor on a limited section of your ‘Final Investigative Project Report’ during your final supervision session(s). You may be supervised either as a member of an active learning set or individually. The approach to your supervision will be determined by your supervisor. It will depend on the inter-relatedness of your investigative project and those of your peers being supported by the same supervisor. You do not possess the authority to demand either individual or active learning set supervision. You are expected to meet with your supervisor in line with the schedule given to you by the module tutor.

Summative Assessment
You will be summatively assessed by five items of inter-related Coursework.

1. Investigative Project Rationale and Research Design Report: This report will include the rationale, research goals, indicative literature review, and proposed research design for your investigative project.
2. Investigative Project Mandatory Approval Documents: These documents will include your Research Ethics Approval Confirmation, Health and Safety Approval Confirmation, Laboratory Equipment and Materials Approval Confirmation for your investigative project. If you do not possess and submit the mandatory approval documents for your investigative project, you will not be allowed to proceed to complete your investigative project described in your ‘Investigative Project Rationale and Research Design Report’. Instead, the module tutor will assign you desktop-type investigative project that will not require you to undertake any activity in the laboratory or that may pose an ethical or health and safety risk to you or anybody else.
3. Investigative Project Interim Report: This document will include the introduction, literature review, research method, and the presentation of results for your investigative project.
4. Investigative Project Final Report: This document will build upon your ‘Investigative Project Interim Report’ and include the interpretation of results, discussion, recommendations and conclusions of your investigative project.
5. Investigative Project Reflective Poster: This will be a digital poster created using Microsoft PowerPoint that will present an overview of your investigative project and your reflection of being a researcher.

All five items of inter-related coursework will holistically assess your ability to demonstrate MLOs 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. You will receive digital feedback for each component of assessment using a standardised template and a list of three things that you did well and three things that you could have done better. The latter feedback will allow you to reflect on your ability to improve your performance in time for the next item of summative assessment.





Module abstract

This is a module in which you will be guided by an academic supervisor to independently undertake an in-depth investigation linked to your professional area and which will enhance the skills you will need as a practicing engineer. You will investigate this topic to a depth which demonstrates your ability to be awarded an honours degree through building on your existing engineering ability, applying advanced engineering skills and techniques, deriving conclusions supported by your investigation and presenting your outcomes in a professional manner.
