What will I learn on this module?
This module will enable you to develop your understanding of the role of the engineering professions within the modern World and give you the opportunity to consider how a graduate engineer may shape the future. You will learn: how the engineering professions are structured and operate, how engineers may play a significant role within sustainable development and ethical responsibility in Global development and an engineer’s responsibility in Heath, Safety and management of risk.
You will develop and evaluate learning and communication skills to enhance your technical literacy. You will develop the ability to examine your own learning through reflection by connecting knowledge and experience through application and evaluation. Practical exercises will enable you to develop your ability to 'acquire, analyse and present' data and technical information. This will involve you in; information retrieval, data acquisition and management, as well as experiencing a range of approaches to the presentation of technical information.
How will I learn on this module?
You will learn by taking part in guided exercises as an individual or in groups. A small number of lectures are used to introduce the knowledge that you will then apply during the practical and seminar sessions. You will be introduced to the foundation of the skills that you will employ throughout your programme so that you understand the context of their application. This will enable you to engage in practical and seminar sessions where you will be given the opportunity of practicing those skills.
By being guided in the evaluation of your own learning through reflection you will understand how you may develop your own approaches to the effective use of the learning opportunities presented during your wider programme and also into employment in the engineering sector or those many businesses that value an engineering education.
How will I be supported academically on this module?
This module will include lecture classes where as a larger group you will be expected to exercise your ability in note taking and also be supported by additional materials to consolidate your understanding on the eLP (electronic learning portal).
Where you are involved in smaller seminar and practical sessions you will be involved in exercises where your tutor will be able to give direct formative feedback on your performance. It is important that you fully engage in these seminar and practical sessions by completing any directed learning preparation material for this formative feedback to develop and compliment your own reflection upon your learning.
If you find that you have questions, either to assist your understanding or through academic curiosity, the practical and seminar classes will provide an opportunity to discuss these with your tutor in addition to the regular support provided by the Department's standard student support processes as described in your programme handbook.
What will I be expected to read on this module?
All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. The reading list for this module can be found at: http://readinglists.northumbria.ac.uk
(Reading List service online guide for academic staff this containing contact details for the Reading List team – http://library.northumbria.ac.uk/readinglists)
What will I be expected to achieve?
Knowledge & Understanding:
1 - Describe, communicate and illustrate knowledge of the role and responsibility of the engineering profession within the modern World
Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:
2 - Analyse and interpret engineering data obtained from a range of sources including literature, instrumentation and experimentation.
Personal Values Attributes (Global / Cultural awareness, Ethics, Curiosity) (PVA):
3 - Demonstrate the ability to work in a team, to given timescales and produce evidence of becoming a reflective practitioner.
4 - Apply learning skills in both directed and independent learning tasks and identify learning gain.
How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed through the production of a portfolio of 3 coursework exercise which will cover all of the Learning Outcomes. There will be opportunities to discuss the work as it progresses and you will receive written feedback on the final work. Towards the end of the module you will be given an open book examination based around defined material. This will address Learning Outcome 2 and the feedback will assist you in your progression through your degree programme.

Module abstract
This module is an important introduction to the knowledge and skills that you will use throughout your degree programme and also during your future employment. You will learn about the engineering profession and its important role within the modern World and you will also learn about your own learning process. There will be lecture classes but most of your taught classes will be smaller seminar or practical classes providing you with a broad range of formative opportunities and an active learning experience and for this reason most of the assessment is by coursework.
