What will I learn on this module?

The module provides you a first level course in vehicle design. You will be introduced the theoretical aspects of concepts and methods of the vehicle design process and the use of engineering materials to create and develop economically viable vehicle parts and components to satisfy customer and user needs. You will carry out both computer-aided design and practical "design-make-test" exercises which require an understanding of the different properties of engineering materials.

How will I learn on this module?

You will learn design constraints including environmental and sustainability limitations, and health and safety issues. You will use specialist computer software CATIA to aid the design process, including the production of engineering drawings (2D draughting and 3D Modelling) and manufacture of prototypes.

The module will be delivered to you through a combination of lectures, seminars and practical laboratory exercises. Summative assessment will be via two assignments. Assignment 1 will be an individual assignment where you will be involved in the design of vehicle components using specialized software CATIA. In Assignment 2 you will be working in groups to design and build car prototypes. Formative feedback will be given to you during seminars and laboratories.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

In addition to direct contact with the module team during lectures and seminars, you will learn how to design parts using CATIA and get hands-on experience building prototype cars. You will also be regularly referred to supporting resources including relevant texts, student software downloads and relevant multimedia materials. References to these resources will be made available to you through the e-learning portal and in lectures and seminars.

How will I be assessed?

Summative Assessments

Individual assignment involving (40%). Feedback given to students in class as a group within 20 working days of the class. MLO1, 2, 4, 5

Assignment involves students working in groups (60%). Feedback given to students on their exam script within 20 working days of the exam. MLO1, 2, 3, 4, 5

Formative Assessments

Seminars (problem solving sessions). Feedback will be provided through discussion in class including about problems designed to aid you to develop your knowledge and skills to feed forward to the assessments. MLO1, 2, 5

Module abstract

The module will introduce the theoretical aspects of the vehicle design process and the use of engineering materials to create and develop economically viable vehicle parts and components to satisfy customer and user needs. It will include both computer-aided design and practical "design-make-test" exercises which require an understanding of the properties of engineering materials. The topics will cover the engineering drawings, assemblies, design specifications, tolerances, design methods applied to vehicle components. You will learn about research methods for the experimental validation and modelling of vehicle components and then apply those methods to design and build vehicle prototype through the use of the Automotive Engineering laboratory facilities and through the use of industry-standard software. It be assessed via two assignments, the first one involves the design of vehicle components using specialized software CATIA while the second one involves working in groups to design and build car prototypes.
