What will I learn on this module?

You will learn to develop the ability to apply appropriate scientific and technological foundations for understanding the operation, performance and design of internal combustion engines. The module will make a primary contribution to your ability to apply knowledge of thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, engine fundamentals, alternative fuels and combustion chemistry to model, analyse and design advanced engine systems.

How will I learn on this module?

This module studies the fundamentals of how the design and operation of internal combustion engines affect their performance, operation, fuel requirements, and environmental impact. Topics include fluid flow, thermodynamics, combustion, heat transfer and fuel properties, with reference to engine power, efficiency, and emissions. You will learn by examining the design features and operating characteristics of different types of internal combustion engines: spark-ignition, diesel, dual-fuel, HCCI and other advanced-cycle engines. We will cover various types of alternative fuels such as biodiesel, methanol, ethanol, propane - butane, LPG, CNG, biogas, hydrogen, their characteristics and properties. We will also cover operating and environmental characteristics of diesel engine with biodiesel fuel; possibilities of utilization of methanol and ethanol in current gasoline engines; operating and environmental characteristics of gasoline engine with methanol and ethanol; operating and environmental characteristics of engines with propane - butane, LPG, CNG and biogas. The module includes a project in optimization of engine performance using engine lab facilities and/or engine modelling software. You will learn by engaging with a combination of lectures, seminars, laboratories and directed learning which will support your ability to work by yourself to advance your knowledge and skills. Assessment will support your learning. The examination feedback will be provided individually and also generically to indicate where the cohort has a strong or a weaker answer to examination questions. Feedback to allow you to reflect and improve will be provided in the lectures on problem solving tasks and throughout the seminars and laboratories through discussion and problem solving.

In addition to direct contact with the module team during lectures, seminars and laboratories you are encouraged to develop your curiosity by making direct contact with the module team either via email or the open door policy operated throughout the programme. Summative Assessments

Course Work-Lab report (30%). Feedback given to students in class as a group within 20 working days of the class. MLO1, 3, 5

Examination (40%). Feedback given to students on their exam script within 20 working days of the exam. MLO 1, 3, 5

Module abstract

This module discusses the main technologies and their future trends concerning the Actual Engine Cycles and their Analysis, Combustion Thermochemistry, Alternative Fuels, In-cylinder Charge Motion and Turbulence, Exhaust Emissions and Air Pollution, Novel Engine Combustion Modes. The module is intended to relate and develop your knowledge and understanding of fundamental engineering principles and theory to the science of internal combustion engines, alternative and renewable fuels. You will learn about advanced research methods for the experimental validation and modelling of internal combustion engine systems and then apply those methods to evaluate the performance, efficiency and control of a representative engine system through the use of the Automotive Engineering laboratory facilities and through the use of industry-standard software. By combining the lectures and laboratory sessions in practical engine development, you will have a chance to extend your knowledge and perspectives.
