What will I learn on this module?

You will begin the module by being introduced to the significance of materials science and engineering for 21st century engineers through the fundamentals of metal, polymers, ceramics and composites. Your will learn about different materials’ properties and internationally recognised standardised practices for testing them. You will develop an understanding of how properties can be optimised for various materials and how you can engineer materials at various to get the maximum and desired performance from them. Principal manufacturing processes used for engineering materials within a context of the structure-property-processing relationship will be covered in detail. Awareness on sustainability (e.g. eco-auditing) and preventative measures for degradation (e.g. corrosion) will also be covered. Within this module you will also undertake groupwork where you will be taught how to make engineering decisions as a group, manage your time and also personal reflection upon your team working skills.

How will I learn on this module?

You will learn through lectures, seminars, and practical laboratory sessions in addition to independent and directed learning. The lectures will cover relevant principles and theories with the aid of hands-on in-class practical and group exercises. A number of laboratory sessions will be used to enhance your active learning experience. Formative feedback will be provided on the work undertaken in the laboratories. You will also learn materials selection and design process techniques using industry standard materials selection software. Flash based interactive animations and platforms like steeluniversity.org and doitpoms.ac.uk will be used for gaining supplementary understanding of the scheduled sessions. A summative collaborative task involving looking into the appropriateness of existing materials technology and commenting on the scope of further improvement would prepare you for one of the real industry practices, i.e. team working and project management. The learning strategy for this module is developmental, with comprehensive and friendly support on the fundamentals of materials engineering. This will allow specifically fostering of your team working, self-directed conceptual thinking, problem solving technical and self-reflection capabilities.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

Small group sized seminar and laboratory sessions will be scheduled to assist your understanding of materials engineering. During these sessions, you will be guided to do relevant worksheet and exercises. E-learning portal will be updated regularly prior to the actual delivery of lectures, seminars and practical laboratory sessions. You will be guided to directed learning assignments to enhance your understanding of the module. Formative feedback will also be provided on laboratory work that is designed to integrate theory and practice. Feedback will be provided within the faculty set guidelines for all assessments. Apart from that, we operate with open-door philosophy for students which mean that you are able to meet your tutors as often as you find it necessary.

MLO1 Explain the principles of materials development, selection and sustainability and the wide scope and divergent role of materials in engineering.
MLO2 Describe engineering material (metals, ceramics, polymers and composites), properties and relevance to various engineering applications.
MLO3 Demonstrate awareness of the optimisation of materials’ performance for particular applications through composition, processing and post-manufacturing treatments.

Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:
MLO4 Comment on appropriateness analyses of material(s) for an engineering application with clear emphasis on the scope of further improvements.

How will I be assessed?

Summative Assessments

A Coursework (50% weighting) 3000 words or equivalent . MLO3, MLO4 and MLO5 will be assessed.

002: An Examination (2 hours, (50% weighting) to assess MLO1, 2, 3 and 4. The exam will cover all the theoretical content of the module and its practical application.

Formative Assessments

Formative assessmentswill be used to test progress on the achievements of MLO1, 2, 3 and 4. Formative feedback will also be provided on laboratory work that is designed to integrate theory and practice.

Individual written feedback will be providedsummative assessment within 20 working days of submission





Module abstract

You will be taught on learning how to research during seminars and lectures (Research Oriented) using tools such as CES Edupack and materials design and selection techniques. You will be given work sheets during seminars which will involve group discussion for the summative assessment 001, you will be involved analysing the appropriateness of existing material(s) being used in an engineering application and then recommending new materials solutions for improved performance of the product. For this particular summative assessment which involves recommending new materials after analysing existing and researching developing/ developed materials technology, you will be taught how to use research tools like research databases and an industry standard materials selection software (such as CES Edupack).
