What will I learn on this module?

You will be familiarised with a range of automotive vehicle dynamics concepts and their use. This will enable you to develop the skills needed to investigate and improve vehicle performance. Your developed understanding of automotive vehicle dynamics, including simple lateral, longitudinal and ride quality models will be applied to a number of vehicle subsystems. An overview of active safety systems will be introduced including the basic concepts and terminology and state-of-the-art developments. This module also reviews and shows the application of the techniques of vibration monitoring that are available to the modern engineer.

How will I learn on this module?

You will acquire knowledge in vehicle dynamics, including vehicle vibrations and suspensions through lectures and seminars. The laboratory sessions will allow you to develop analytical and computer skills that will enable you to analyse and design two-and three-dimensional vehicle components and entire working assemblies You will learn how to use simulation software to analyse and optimise the dynamics of the vehicle subsystems as well as the use of three dimensional computer aided design (3D CAD) software for solid modelling. In addition to the taught classes you will engage in directed and independent learning to further develop your understanding. Assessment consists of two coursework assignments. Feedback will be provided individually and also generically to indicate where you have a strong or a weaker answer to questions. Formative feedback will be provided in the lectures on problem solving tasks and throughout the seminars and laboratories.

In addition to direct contact with the module team during lectures, seminars and laboratories, you are encouraged to develop your curiosity by carry out your own independent learning and discussing this with the module team either via email or the open door approach operated throughout the programme. You will also be regularly guided to supporting resources including relevant texts, software downloads and relevant multimedia materials. References to these resources will be made available through the e-learning portal and in lectures and seminars.

Knowledge & Understanding:
MLO1 Demonstrate a conceptual understanding and mathematically characterise linear and nonlinear behaviour in a vehicle.
MLO2 Demonstrate a systematic understanding and a theoretical model for vehicle lateral and longitudinal dynamics, as well as vehicle ride behaviour.

Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:
MLO3 Apply the methods and techniques to analyse the dynamics of vehicle subsystems and provide fundamental recommendation to design and improve the function of the subsystems.
MLO4 Deploy accurately the fundamental simulation techniques to analyse vehicle dynamic behaviour including validation.

MLO5 Critically evaluate arguments, assumptions, abstract concepts and data in characterising the vehicle systems and how automated subsystems such as ABS, rear-wheel steering, and active suspension will change vehicle performance and vehicle/roadway interaction.

How will I be assessed?

Formative Assessment
• You will be formatively assessed on all learning outcomes during problem-solving seminars using scenarios set by the module tutor. You may be asked to complete these tasks either as an individual or in a module tutor assigned group. You will receive feedback from the module tutor to enhance your learning and aid your understanding of the subject. The problem-solving seminars will also be used to facilitate group discussion and debate to support your professional interaction with your peers.

Module abstract

In this module you will explore the main technologies of vehicle dynamics and their future trends. This will include different types of vehicle dynamics subsystems, mechanisms, and suspensions. The module is intended to relate and develop your knowledge and understanding of fundamental engineering principles and theory to the field of vehicle dynamics. You will learn about advanced research methods for the validation and modelling of vehicle dynamics systems and then apply those methods to evaluate the performance and efficiency of a representative dynamic system through the use of practical labs and industry-standard software.
