What will I learn on this module?

You will gain the knowledge and analytical skills required to design and manufacture automotive components. In particular, in this module you will develop advanced techniques for 3D Design, real world static and dynamic event simulation, optimisation and manufacturing simulation applied to products. On completion of this module you should be able to accurately analyse, specify and predict a design performance using techniques covered in this module.

How will I learn on this module?

In this module you will learn to use of the knowledge and analytical skills developed during lectures and seminars, design and manufacture products for automotive industry using CAE techniques. This involves the analysis and use of manufacturing systems and software packages that are commonly used by leading automotive industries. You will use a range of analytical techniques and systems to make performance predictions and to support theoretical considerations of the systems´ design process. This is intended to allow you to experience and demonstrate your depth of understanding of the design, analysis and manufacturing processes and to give you the opportunity to reflect upon modern product development practices in automotive engineering. The module will use a combination of scheduled lecture,supporting seminar and IT sessions. In this module you will be assessed via two individual projects projects. You will receive formative feedback throughout the semester in the form of verbal feedback and seminar sessions.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

In addition to direct contact with the module team during lectures and seminars, your engagement with this module will go beyond the classroom through practical sessions – in both CAD-based design that will immerse you in the module learning. Module support is achieved through engagement with tutors in the classroom, practical sessions and through the comprehensive and directed use of supporting resources including relevant texts, student software downloads and relevant multimedia materials. Your access to these resources will be made available through e-learning portal, lectures and seminars.

How will I be assessed?

Summative Assessments

Coursework 1 (50%, 3000 words or equivalent). Individual written feedback will be given within 20 working days of the submission. MLOs 1, 2 & 3

Coursework 2 (50%, 3000 words or equivalent). Inedividual written fedback will be given within 20 working days of the submission MLOs 2, 4 & 5

Formative Assessments

Seminars (problem solving sessions). Formative feedback will be provided through discussion in class including about problems designed to aid you to develop your knowledge and skills to feed forward to the assessments. MLO1, 2, 3, 4, 5





Module abstract

The module will introduce the theoretical concepts and methods of automotive design and analysis to create and develop economically viable vehicle design to satisfy customer and user needs. The module is intended to r develop your knowledge and understanding of fundamental engineering principles and theory to the field of vehicle design, including Computer Aided Engineerin (CAE) methods. You will learn about the application of engineering research for the validation of vehicle components and then apply these methods to design a vehicle model through the use of specialist software.
