AF5004 - Finance, Financial Markets and Institutions

What will I learn on this module?

You will learn the key aspects of the regulations, ethics and law that define the ‘rules’ for finance, and the main financial instruments that are used, including; Money market instruments, Bonds, Equities, Foreign exchange and Insurance. You will draw from a range of historical case studies to see how regulation within the financial system has transformed. You will be encouraged to discussed and critique the latest regulation changes using academic literature to back up your arguments.
You will learn about these instruments in the context of the worldwide markets in which they are traded as well as the principal institutions that use these instruments and that trade them worldwide. To apply the knowledge acquired in this module, you will be using real-time financial information. Therefore throughout the module you will be required to keep up to date with the latest developments within the financial markets to enable you to contribute to this module.

How will I learn on this module?

You will learn through lectures (24hours), seminars (12hours) and independent study (162hours). Within the lectures, the tutor will enhance your understanding of the financial instruments, regulations and ethics to enable you meet the module learning outcomes.
The seminars are an opportunity for you to further develop your understanding and knowledge of the topics and will be structured to incorporate numerous exam-style questions to provide formative feedback of your progress on a week-by-week basis. The formal teaching is supplemented using the electronic learning platform to provide:
• Additional reading materials to contextualise the subject content, including news, case study materials and academic journal articles.
• Audio and PowerPoint presentations to supplement your independent study
• Exam practice materials and;

How will I be supported academically on this module?

Support for this module will include interactive lecture sessions and feedback from tutors during small-group seminars. In addition tutors will respond to questions individually and for more general and/or important issues will respond using the University’s eLearning Portal so that the whole group can benefit.. Finally you will have access to range of reading and visual materials via the modules online reading list.

At the end of the module, you will have achieved:

• Awareness of the institutions and the principal products and services that comprise the financial services industry (MLO1).
• An awareness of the regulatory approach to the financial services industry and application of these to case studies relating to financial crime (MLO2).

How will I be assessed?

Your understanding of the learning outcomes will be assessed by means of a single, 3 hour closed book, written examination. This addresses MLO1, MLO2 and MLO3.

The exam comprises three sections:
a) Multiple Choice Questions (20%)
b) Short Answer Questions (40%)
c) 4 Essay questions out of a possible 5 (40%)

Module abstract

Do you want to know the rules under which finance takes place?
Do you want to know more about financial markets, the institutions that operate in them and the key mechanisms used in those markets?

This module creates the foundation for understanding the financial markets, the way that they operate, the regulations by which they must abide and the daily ethical considerations that practitioners will be confronted with. The lectures are research-led and practice informed with the interaction between the regulations and practice being explored in more contemplative seminar sessions to build knowledge into understanding.
