What will I learn on this module?

Within this module you will explore and evaluate contemporary research and theory on the interior condition, architectural environments and the relationship between interior, building, place and authenticity. The module provides you with an advanced platform to confirm the link between contemporary theories of architecture, interior architecture and the related arts, where you will be encouraging to develop an inquisitive and analytical approach to interior architectural theory, confirming skills in the analysis of evidence, which will aid the formulation of judgements, founded on knowledge of theory as well as on personal observation and experience. How will I learn on this module?

Within this module, you will learn through lectures, seminars, tutorials and independent learning. The tailored lecture series will cover key themes, principles and concepts that will enable you to embark upon an individual enquiry within a pluralist and heterogeneous landscape of influences. Seminars will allow you to formulate an informed and structured approach to your own research enquiry and literary reviews, whilst tutorials will support the direction of your learning with discussion around your chosen area of study.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

Your learning will be supported through the lecture programme content and the provision of supporting texts. The structured seminar sessions will allow you to discuss approaches to topic selection, research and analysis skills and writing plans. You will agree a topic, key themes and approaches to your theory paper within seminars and tutorial discussions with your tutor, helping you to manage your work. You will also benefit from specialist software to authenticate the originality of your personal enquiry, whilst benefiting from peer support and peer learning. All module material will be available on the eLearning Portal (ELP) so that you can access information when you need to and we operate an open door policy to help support student learning when it is needed most. The university library offers support for all students through its catalogue and an Ask4Help Online service.

IPSA 1. Evidence advanced research and analytical skills with consideration of the influences of the artistic and cultural context within an articulated viewpoint.

How will I be assessed?

Formative assessment will take place in two ways;
1. within a submitted Outline Proposal (500 words) where student will indicate their topic of choice and outline the intended structure for their theory paper (KU2; PVA1)
2. Within individual tutorials to provide ongoing developmental guidance


Summative assessment is of the 4000 word theory paper, covering all MLO’s….
KU1, KU2, KU3, IPSA1, PVA1

Feedback will be offered in verbal and written form to provide advice for further development and a critical appraisal of work and performance.
Moderation of summative assessment will take place at the end of the module.

Module abstract

Within this module you will explore and evaluate contemporary research and theory on the interior condition, architectural environments and the relationship between interior, building, place and authenticity. You will develop a critical knowledge of key theories as observed within a pluralist and heterogeneous landscape of creative and cultural thinking towards the production of a theory paper on a topic of your choice. Whilst lectures will develop discussion on key ideas, seminars will allow you to develop a strategic approach to your topic of choice and your approach to academic writing and individual tutorials will help you direct your areas of enquiry with authority.
