What will I learn on this module?

Having been introduced to music’s place in the classroom curriculum in your first year, and having had some teaching experience working with your peers, this course pays closer attention to music pedagogy in general, and gives you the opportunity to experience genuine teaching situations outside the classroom, reflecting on what you learn from the observation of others. You also continue with your practical work, either giving and receiving lessons by working with someone in the class who plays your instrument, or by working with other students who play an instrument belonging to the same family (brass, woodwind, strings etc.), or by carrying on with the instrument you started as a beginner in first year.

How will I learn on this module?

Principles of music teaching will be covered in a series of lectures and workshops, which will also prepare you for the serial placement. You will go on a serial placement (one day per week) with an experienced peripatetic and/or private music teacher; the focus is likely to be on observation, although depending on circumstances there may be the opportunity to undertake some supervised teaching. Meanwhile, you will continue to learn how to teach through doing it, experiencing both the roles of teacher and pupil. You will either pair up with another student who plays your instrument (or an instrument of the same family), and give one another lessons, or you will carry on with the instrument you started in first year as a beginner. Your effectiveness as a teacher will be measured in regular public, workshopped lessons where you will receive feedback from staff and from your peers.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

You will be given considerable support and encouragement by those teaching on the course. The programme leader and Course Tutor will be on hand to offer help and guidance, either in person during the advertised office hours or via email, and you will be working in an environment where you and your peers will offer one another mutual support and honest critical appraisal. You will benefit from the knowledge, support and guidance of your placement teacher, and from the school environments where you are placed (where applicable). You will be given appropriate material both in class and via the eLearning environment.

How will I be assessed?

1. FORMATIVE:. Practical assessment – observed lesson masterclass
2. Practical assessment – observed lesson masterclass of 15 mins (50%). MLOs: 1, 2, 3, 4

3. Essay (50%). MLOs 1, 2

You will receive oral and written feedback on the practical assessments, as well as oral feedback in class.

You will receive written feedback on your essay, comprising annotations to your script and a short report.

There are regular opportunities to prepare for the practical assessment through participation in workshopped lessons in front of your peers and staff.
