Biomedical scientists perform a wide range of scientific investigations to support the diagnosis and treatment of disease.  It is estimated that more than 70% of diagnoses are made based on the results of investigations carried out by biomedical scientists, thus they are an important part of a multidisciplinary team which lies at the heart of modern healthcare delivery.

A wide variety of investigations are utilised in this process and range from cancer screening to diagnosing rare genetic disorders, from food poisoning and infection control to blood transfusion.

Our Biomedical Science Degree will provide you with both general and specialist knowledge in the field of Biomedical Science, enabling you to understand the fundamental principles of the pathogenesis of disease and strategies for their investigation and treatment. Teaching on the course is delivered by research-active staff and visiting NHS practitioners ensuring teaching is research informed as well as relevant to the workplace.

The course also has a strong practical element and throughout your degree you will have access to state- of-the-art laboratory equipment that is in line with NHS standards, including clinical chemical analysers and tissue culture facilities for example. Upon graduation, you will not only have an excellent foundation for future study or research but you will also have a range of strong transferable skills applicable to biomedical science careers but to many other professions.

The BSc Biomedical Science course also offers an optional placement year. This is secured by the student and can be in industry or in an NHS laboratory. If the latter is the case where education and training is provided, we offer a transfer opportunity to the Applied Biomedical Science BSc (Hons) degree which accelerates professional registration with the Health and Care Professions Council.

94% of students are satisfied with the quality of this course overall (Unistats 2015)
