CN0511 - Theory 3: Psychosocial Approaches for Children and Young People

Throughout this module, you will be engaged in a variety of learning and teaching approaches. You will learn from experts from practice including service users and practitioners. Web-based resources, and face-to-face in-class sessions underpin the teaching through the ‘flipped classroom’ approach (Bergman & Sam’s, 2012). This approach enables you to engage with technology-enhanced learning, with the provision of links to the web-based resources and other useful materials via Blackboard Ultra and Library resources. There will be a combination of pre-recorded lecture videos and interactive e-learning packages available via Blackboard. Flipping the classroom enables you to engage in both directed and self-directed study outside of formal teaching sessions as preparatory work for facilitated seminars. Engagement with this activity is essential for your active participation in the facilitated sessions.

These sessions will include individual work, group discussion and debate, where you will be encouraged to consider competing perspectives, share opinions and experiences, and develop a greater understanding of holistically caring for children and young people.

Contact with the module team is available in person, via telephone and email. Support for your learning is also offered via a 24 hour IT Helpline, Student Support and Wellbeing Services via Ask4help and student portal. Skills Plus, the University Library’s collection of online learning materials to support the development of your academic skills.

You will also support each other via peer support, through engaging in discussion and debate to enhance your learning. Additional relevant materials, including the electronic reading list and other teaching and learning methods will be available via Blackboard Ultra/library services to enhance and support your learning. All support will be in line with any Disabled Student Support Recommendations (DSSR).

The use of peer support is a vital component of developing critical discussion and generating ideas and will be utilised during this module.

Formative Assessment:
Working in small peer groups you will find a health related poster to analyse and develop ideas about the elements needed to make a good poster. (MLO 1 and 2)

Summative assessment
Poster Presentation (1000 words). This will be electronic submission. No more than 1000 words to be used within poster and supporting notes. Electronic feedback will be provided.

With increasing emphasis on the public health agenda around Children and Young People’s Health mental health this module will help you to develop a deeper understanding of the care needs of children and young people with psychosocial health issues. Through the application of contemporary evidence based literature and knowledge delivered by experts in the field (or experts by profession), you will be able develop a knowledge base that will enable you to proficiently provide holistic nursing care to service users with additional needs. You will gain the knowledge and skills needed for effective practice in continually changing and challenging environments with the confidence and ability to think critically, apply knowledge and skills and provide expert evidenced based care.

Furthermore, the module will enable you to grow your existing skills in appraising research and considering how this can be applied to practice for the benefit of the child or young person and their family. The summative assessment will allow you to explore a specific health need and demonstrate how you would holistically care for a child or young person with this need.
