What will I learn on this module?
Learning on the module will enhance your understanding of the structure and function of the human body. This module explores anatomy and physiology through an integrative systems approach. Through this you will be provided with opportunities to help you understand the complex relationship between health, anatomy, physiology and diseases that you may encounter whilst nursing patients of all ages with diverse health and nursing needs including: older people; pregnant and post-natal women; people with mental health needs and people with needs associated with their learning disabilities. This learning will be achieved through an exploration of diseases and conditions that arise from a malfunction of the systems of the body which will include an element of biochemistry and genetics. Pharmacology will also be examined in relation to pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics. You will also examine the role of the nurse in supporting an individual with illness. During this module you will explore topics such as: Body systems; Altered pathology and the relationship to disease and illness; and examine the role of the nurse in supporting an individual with illness in diverse nursing settings.
How will I learn on this module?
A variety of approaches are taken to teaching and learning within this module so that different learning styles are taken into consideration and accommodated. You will be taught key concepts related to the system disease/condition via a lead lecture to give you an overview of the topic area. This module will be delivered via lectures, online student support and workshops. You will be given the opportunity to explore some of the key issues raised in the lecture in more depth to obtain a greater understanding. The workshops will also facilitate shared learning and development of your role as a nurse by exploring concepts related to illness and wellbeing. You will be expected to engage in tutor guided independent learning using materials available electronically on the e-Learning Portal to enable you develop a greater understanding of the diseases and acute conditions associated with the human body. Ongoing formative activities will be given to allow you to assess your own development through independent learning.
How will I be supported academically on this module?
You will be supported academically during this module by the lecturers within the module team. You will have feedback via a mark from your mock multiple- choice exam paper which will give you an indication of what you need to develop in preparation for your summative module exam. You will be made aware of who the module team are via your module handbook. You will already have been allocated a personal tutor throughout the programme, however module specific queries should be directed to the module lead or a member of the module team. You are also academically supported via information on the electronic platform. Lecture notes/handouts will be made available for you to prior to delivery to enable preparation before taught sessions. Peer group discussion will be facilitated during workshops. This will enhance your understanding of the systems approach to diseases and conditions associated to anatomy and physiology.

How will I be assessed?
Formative assessment:
You will be required to undertake an on-line mock multiple choice examination which will be self-assessed. You are also expected to complete the tutor guided independent study activities within the module, receiving formative feedback in class on your learning (MLO 1 - 5)
Summative assessment:
Your assessment will be a 2 hour unseen written exam. The questions will be focused on module content and the online directed study material will also assist in preparing you for this exam. (MLO 1-4).
Feedback on cohort performance will be given via the module electronic learning platform site.

Module abstract
This is an exciting module to study as it enhances and furthers your knowledge in respect of the systems of the body. Through previous study and/or tutor guided independent learning in module NS0429 you will have studied normal anatomy and physiology. In this module you will be exploring the diseases and conditions affecting individuals when systems of the body are no longer working to their full potential. The research based lectures, seminars and directed study material all aim to give you insight into applying what you know about anatomy and physiology to the main health problems that require nursing intervention. You will be well supported throughout this module with technology enabled directed study material, face-to-face lectures and seminars where peer group support is encouraged. The formative activity prepares you for the exam. You will also be supported by the module team where you are offered an online group tutorial prior to the exam. The module material will be based on the most up to date research giving a rationale for studying specific diseases in preparing you for employment as a registered nurse.
