NS0532 - Evidence Based Nursing Practice

What will I learn on this module?

During the module you will be supported and encouraged to engage with published research and other types of evidence that informs nursing practice. You will be given the opportunity to explore research terminology, methodologies and methods through the consideration of relevant research studies in an enquiry-based learning (EBL), workshop style approach. The aims of the module will be to support and develop your knowledge about research so as to increase your confidence as a consumer of the research evidence underpinning nursing practice. Skills will be developed that allow appreciation of the variety of approaches to healthcare research and you will be able to critically examine the quality of research and discuss its value within nursing relating to with people of all ages including: children; older people; pregnant and post-natal women; people with mental health needs and people with needs associated with their learning disabilities.
On this module you will explore the following topic areas:
• Research methodological approaches and their value to nursing and healthcare practice: Methodologies and methods used in research. Critical evaluation of research quality.
• Data Management and Metrics: Research Governance, ethics and protecting vulnerable people.
• Evidence Based Practice: This will include debate around the hierarchies of research evidence and the production of protocols and guidelines that inform nursing practice.
This module will enable you to further develop lifelong learning skills that will benefit your future career in nursing.

How will I learn on this module?

You will experience a variety of different approaches to learning and teaching during this module. You will engage in a “flipped classroom style” process which requires you to access online learning materials and engage in tutor guided independent learning prior to attending taught sessions. You will then attend workshop style, team based, learning and teaching sessions which will provide a facilitated learning opportunity for you to deepen your prior learning alongside your colleagues, engaging in a supportive peer learning process. Materials used in the module will include authentic scenarios based on nursing and health related subjects. You will work independently and in groups on structured activities around these scenarios drawing on electronic resources such as digitally recorded clips from suitable websites, which will augment material within your workbook. The workbook is divided into four sections that focus on different approaches to evidence generation and research in nursing; frameworks for appraising published research; and ethical considerations in research. This module is supported with materials on the electronic learning platform (Blackboard Ultra) where you will find all your teaching materials and additional information to help you learn. In addition, the electronic reading lists will highlight to you the texts that will be of use in supporting your journey on this module.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

The teachers on this module will provide you with academic support. Assignment guidance will be provided at the start of the module and each taught session will reflect on its relevance for your assignment development. You will also have at least one online facilitated seminar tutorial where you will have a further opportunity to ask assignment related questions. Your peers on the Programme will also be able to provide you with support. Many of the activities undertaken within workshop sessions are aimed at enabling fellow students to talk and learn with one another. Your Personal Tutor will support you throughout the whole programme, including supporting you with academic work if required. Skills Plus, part of the library services, provide helpful guides to support many aspects of your learning within this module.

1. Analyse and appraise the key features of methodological design in both qualitative and quantitative approaches to research in the evidence-base for health care
2. Apply recognised frameworks for the critical appraisal of published research for evidence-based practice and use research terminology appropriately

3. Evaluate evidence via the evidence-based practice cycle and be able to relate and justify this to the practice of healthcare and nursing practice with people of all ages and in a variety of healthcare settings

How will I be assessed?

FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT
The aim of the formative assessment is to help prepare you for your assignment. Each week formative activities within seminars, workshops and online will be based on the four sections in your formative workbook. By the end of the taught sessions you will have completed your workbook and this will aid you with your summative assignment. (MLO,1, 2, 3,)

SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT
This 2,500 word assignment is an analysis and appraisal of research evidence related to nursing. For this assignment, you will need to select and appraise two published research articles and provide consideration on how the research findings can inform the evidence based nursing practice. (MLO,1, 2, 3,4)

Module abstract

This module offers you an opportunity to get actively engaged with research; to understand its breadth, its scope and application as evidence underpinning the delivery of high quality, safe, effective nursing care with people of all ages including: children; older people; pregnant and post-natal women; people with mental health needs and people with needs associated with their learning disabilities. You will learn from academic staff, some of whom are active researchers and each other about how knowledge can be both produced and critically evaluated to continuously improve the care experience of patients and families. You will learn in small group seminars and workshops about different types of research and its uses. You will also be expected to engage with technology enabled, tutor guided, independent learning in preparation for the workshops to help you maximise your learning journey through the module. Formative activities and independent learning undertaken can be documented in a workbook that will support your summative module assessment. The workbook contains four sections, relating to: different approaches to evidence generation and research in nursing; frameworks for appraising published research; and ethical considerations in research.
