What will I learn on this module?
On this year long module you will learn a range of evidence based professional skills required for registration and employment as a nurse with people of all ages including: older people; people with mental health needs or needs associated with their learning disability and patients who are acutely unwell or need critical care intervention. You will build on the knowledge and skills that you have already acquired in year one of the programme. Specifically, you will be exploring further and refreshing your mandatory skills in safe moving and handling techniques including the bariatric patient; basic life support in hospital; first aid; principles of infection prevention and control; safeguarding vulnerable adults, including older people, children and people with reduced mental capacity and de-escalation. The module will also offer you the opportunity to enhance your understanding of professional practice and apply relevant theories, which will ensure further development of the skills and knowledge that are required for safe, effective and efficient practice leading to increased patient safety.
How will I learn on this module?
The main focus of this module will be learning within your clinical practice placements. This will be supported by classroom based sessions that will aid you to become and evidence based practitioner. Your professional learning in practice will be supported by research rich academic knowledge and critical understanding development through tutor guided independent learning. Lectures, seminars and practical sessions incorporating role play and simulation, will provide you with opportunities to develop an appreciation of the importance of integrating practice and formal theory. Your lectures will examine more critically, key sources of policy and theoretical literature, and will encourage you to connect with your own independent reading, which will be key to your success as a lifelong learner. Your practice learning sessions will enable you to make stronger links between theory and practice, while developing your confidence and clinical performance. You will be expected to engage in tutor guided and self-directed independent learning by reading suggested literature from the module reading list and other sources of reference material. You will also be expected to engage with technology enabled online learning resources to support your learning.
How will I be supported academically on this module?
As with all other modules on your programme, successful academic achievement requires a system of robust support and guidance to help
you develop and focus on your learning needs. Therefore, within this module you will be supported and/or mentored by qualified nurses in the practice learning setting, and academic staff from Northumbria and MCAST who are also qualified nurses with relevant practical experience and theoretical knowledge. The development of your competencies for practice will be supported by material from your classroom based lectures, seminars and practical teaching sessions, in addition to tutor/self-directed independent learning materials provided. You will be given guidance on how to use placement learning and assessment documentation. You will also be visited by your personal tutor on placement who will discuss your progress with you and your allocated mentor. This will ensure you are able to confidently meet the learning outcomes of the module, which will include a range of professional competencies. Your mentor is the key source of learning support whilst on placement. Additional technology enabled academic support will be available online for example via the E learning portal (Blackboard), social networking, mobile applications and collaborative tools such as Skype and Teams.

How will I be assessed?
Formative:
Your professional and practical skills, knowledge and competencies will be assessed during your practice placement in a range of ways. This will include regular, informal, feedback from your mentor and completion of a number of structured assessments that will give you detailed feedback on your performance. These will include Direct Observation of Practice assessments (DOPs), Total Client Care assessments (TCC) and if deemed appropriate by your mentor, a service user evaluation questionnaire (SUE-Q) (MLO 1-7)
Summative:
1. You will be required to continue to develop your Professional Reflective Portfolio (PRP) which will contain a record of your practice achievements including formative feedback, reflective accounts, and an account of key activity. (MLO 3,4,5,6,7)
2. A tripartite assessment will evaluate your understanding and ability to appraise the evidence base that underpins your practice. You will meet with your academic assessor, ideally in a practice setting, where your mentor(s) feedback on your performance over the year will be evaluated. You will have the opportunity during the meeting to discuss evidence and illustrate your developing nursing knowledge and understanding (MLO 1,2, 3,4,5,6).
You will receive ongoing verbal formative feedback. You will also receive verbal and written feedback on your summative assessment at the end of your placement

Module abstract
On this year long module you will continue to learn a range of evidence based professional skills required for registration and employment as a nurse working with people of all ages including: older people; people with mental health needs; people with needs associated with their learning disabilities and patients requiring acute or critical care. You will update your mandatory skills and explore and evaluate evidence that informs your safe and effective practice. Research rich learning will enable you to explore risk assessment and management and understand the skills needed for effective collaborative working. During the module you will examine and evaluate a range of tools used to support nursing practice. Classroom and online based activity will support your learning in the practice setting, where you will be supported by a mentor who is a qualified experienced registered nurse. A range of formative assessment strategies will be used in practice to support your learning and provide feedback on your performance. You will also be encouraged to effectively reflect on feedback and develop your own personal learning plan. In your time on clinical placement you will be able to practice a range of evidence based nursing competencies essential to your future career. The module will culminate with a tripartite assessment where you will have the opportunity to demonstrate your increasing knowledge base and illustrate how you have met the module learning outcomes.
