NS0627 - Foundations of Teaching and Assessing in Nursing Practice

What will I learn on this module?

During this module you will develop your knowledge, skills and expertise in teaching and assessing individuals and groups of both patients and other learners in a classroom environment and a nursing practice environment. This will include critical evaluation of key theoretical concepts underpinning learning, teaching and assessment. Building on and deepening prior learning you will further develop a more critical understanding of how patient education in hospital and in primary care can influence ill health prevention and the health and wellbeing of children and adults including: people with mental health needs and learning disabilities; and pregnant women. This will include a critical analysis of the barriers and enablers to your nursing role in helping patients learn and change their behaviour. You will also explore models of nurse education in theory and practice contexts and you will practice the delivery of teaching and learning to other individual learners and groups of learners working in healthcare. Building on prior learning you will critically explore how assessment influences learning and critique the learning challenges of different types of assessment; including the practice assessment of competency that you will be expected to assess as a mentor after gradation as a registered nurse.

How will I learn on this module?

You will learn on this module through: Key lectures which will introduce you to and enable you to critically examine theoretical perspectives on learning, teaching and assessment. You will be expected to undertake your own independent reading in order to develop your knowledge. During seminars you will be expected to undertake enquiry based learning using a student centred patient/person focused approach, and actively encouraged to reflect with peers and lecturers. In addition, you will work independently and in groups on structured activities drawing on electronic resources, in order to fully engage with and participate in subsequent face to face learning at MCAST or online in the virtual classroom. You will be expected to prepare thoroughly for these using tutor guided independent learning and your other reading, so that you can engage fully in class activities and discussions. Tutors will facilitate and support you with teaching practice sessions in a safe and controlled learning environment, to enable you to see the link between theory and practice whilst exploring skills to enhance your confidence and prepare you for nursing practice as a teacher/ facilitator of learning with other healthcare workers and with patients.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

You will gain support from face to face dialogue with teachers and your peers during lectures, seminars and practical sessions. Details of your assessment will be introduced to you at the start of the module and you will also engage in online group tutorial support. Northumbria University has access to electronic texts and tutorials that will directly support the development of academic skills aimed at improving your critical thinking and analytical writing. Support will also be available to you on line through the electronic learning portal (Blackboard Ultra), social networking and collaborative tools.

How will I be assessed?

Formative Assessment
You will deliver a formative peer group teaching session in class, which will explore concepts relating to the summative assessment. Academic supervisors will engage with you to appraise your current level of understanding and appreciation of the concepts within the activity, to provide formative feedback for undertaking the summative assignment (MLO 1,2,3 & 4)

Summative Assessment
The assessment for this module requires you to identify, plan, deliver and critically evaluate 3 episodes of learning and teaching (including other learners and patients), submit your annotated teaching plans and write a 1000 word evidence based, reflective critique of your experience, identifying your future learning needs.(MLO 1,2,3,4,5)

You will receive written feedback on your assignment to inform your ongoing learning.

Module abstract

During this module you will develop your knowledge, skills and expertise in teaching and assessing individuals and groups of both patients and other learners, including healthcare workers, in a classroom environment and a nursing practice environment. This will include critical evaluation of key theoretical concepts underpinning learning, teaching and assessment. Building on and deepening prior learning you will further develop a more critical understanding of how patient education in hospital and in primary care can influence ill health prevention and the health and wellbeing of children and adults including: people with mental health needs and learning disabilities; and pregnant women. This will include a critical analysis of the barriers and enablers to your nursing role in helping patients learn and change their behaviour. You will engage with highly experienced teachers in lectures and seminars delivered online and face to face. This will include opportunities to practice your teaching skills and gain feedback on your development as a teacher which is an important aspect of the nursing role. You will be assessed by undertaking 3 episodes of teaching/ learning facilitation with other healthcare workers and patients to demonstrate your skills in this role. You will also submit a reflective critique of your performance as a teacher and identify your future learning needs.
