What will I learn on this module?

Throughout this module, you will undertake more advanced learning across the five principal areas of professional practice to acquire higher-level operational knowledge and skills in the following five key areas:

• Response policing
• Policing communities
• Policing the roads
• Information and intelligence
• Conducting investigations.

Throughout this module you undertake a number of operational attachments in the Durham Constabulary area that provide practical experience achieved through operational deployment, in recognition of the complexity of the various operational functions covered by the four distinct policing areas listed below. The combination of classroom learning and the work attachments will provide you with the high-level skills of a multi-competent police constable.

How will I learn on this module?

The module will run across the year where you will learn through classroom based teaching and operational practice, while also undertaking private-study. The module will use case-studies to illustrate topics and achieve learning outcomes. You will then undertake attachments that allow you to experience – Response policing; community policing; roads policing; information and intelligence and conducting investigations.

The module eLearning Portal (eLP) site will contain a module handbook outlining the content of the module. Lecture slides, digital lecture recordings, and supplementary reading etc. will also be made available on the eLP site.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

You will be supported through active participation and discussion during classroom sessions. All lecture and seminar material will be available on the eLP, supplemented with guidance on further relevant reading. During the five attachments through the year you will be supported by area specialists and coaches. Assessment feedback will also be provided to allow you to understand how you performed and how you can build on this performance in subsequent assessments within your programme.

How will I be assessed?

Formative assessment
Some practical law content (covering learning outcomes for roads policing, conducting investigations and information and intelligence) will be formatively assessed by way of online problems and MCQs.


Summative assessment

Whilst undertaking practical operational attachments in the Durham Constabulary area it is expected that you will gather practical and professional evidence to demonstrate Completion of Specialist Attachment (Pass/Fail) MLO 1, 2, 3

Whilst undertaking extended practical operational experience achieved through operational deployment, it is expected that you will gather practical and professional evidence to demonstrate Full Completion of Occupational Competency Portfolio (Pass/Fail) MLO 4

Module abstract

This module will introduce key educational areas both those of more generic policing relevance, but concentrating upon specific policing functions and responsibilities. The module will examine the following five principal areas of professional practice:
• Response policing
• Policing communities
• Policing the roads
• Information and intelligence
• Conducting investigations.
There will be operational attachments providing practical experience in recognition of the complexity of the various operational functions covered by these distinct policing areas. Courses starting in 2021 are offered as a mix of online and face to face teaching due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
