What will I learn on this module?

Students will examine key aspects of leadership and communication within the context of contemporary policing. The module builds upon the notions of ‘the profession’, and ‘professional policing’, with ideas about ‘leadership’, ‘coaching’ and ‘mentoring’ and applies them to the contemporary police organisation and those working within it. Students will also examine the ideas of ‘work-based’ and ‘standardised’ assessment and the relationship of these to professional standards within the police service. Students will consider the role of communication in contemporary policing. Communication is not only important to leadership, coaching and mentoring it is a vital aspect of contemporary policing society and so the module also examines media strategy and engagement and the police’s use of social media.

How will I learn on this module?

Topics will normally be introduced in lectures and explored through blended learning involving a variety of classroom based and on-line activities. The aim is to use interactive presentations, speakers from relevant police departments, tutor-guided and independent student learning, along with student presentations and formative assessments. Students will be encouraged to develop independent learning skills. The university library offers support for all students through its catalogue and an Ask4Help online service

How will I be supported academically on this module?

Students will be supported through a variety of means including classroom participation and discussion. All lecture, seminar and workshop material will be available on the University’s eLearning Portal, supplemented with guidance on further reading relevant to the subjects. Written or verbal assessment feedback will be used to enable students to understand how they performed and how these aspects can be improved in subsequent assessments.

How will I be assessed?

Learning outcomes 1, 2 and 3 will be assessed in an essay of approximately 1,500 words.

Learning outcomes 4 will be assessed by an individual oral presentation of no more than 10 minutes focusing upon a topic related to dealing with the media.

Module abstract

There are two main aspects to the module. One involves the ideas and role of leadership, coaching and mentoring within a contemporary police service. This leads to an examination of professional standards within the police service and the use of ‘work-based’ and ‘standardised’ assessment. The other part considers the role of communication in contemporary policing not only within the police organisation but to the police service. Unsurprisingly, the module examines working with the traditional mass media strategy, as well as the police’s use of social media.
