What will I learn on this module?

This multi-faceted module consider aspects of the police organisation, decision-making and risk, communication, team work and cohesion, culture, professional standards and accountability and builds upon ideas touched upon in year 1. It covers abstract ideas - such as risk - as well as practical issues - such as how circumstances and culture can influence decision-making process and how the police use the national decision model. It also examines key practices that influence how an organisation operates such as team work, communication, and culture. The latter constitutes a key bridge to the other aspects of the module namely, the development and nature of professional standards and contemporary external accountability mechanisms such as Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services and the Independent Office for Police Conduct.

How will I learn on this module?

Topics will normally be introduced in lectures and explored through blended learning involving a variety of classroom based and on-line activities. These could include interactive presentations, speakers from relevant police departments, tutor-guided and independent student learning, along with student presentations and formative assessments. You will be encouraged to develop independent learning skills.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

Students will be supported through a variety of means including classroom participation and discussion. All lecture, seminar and workshop material will be available on the University’s eLearning Portal, supplemented with guidance on further reading relevant to the subjects. Written or verbal assessment feedback will be used to enable students to understand how they performed and how these aspects can be improved in subsequent assessments. The university library offers support for all students through its catalogue and an Ask4Help online service

What will I be expected to achieve?

Knowledge & Understanding:
1) Analyse policies, procedures that have been created to reduce the possibility of professional malpractice and increase community confidence in the police


2) Understand how numerous variables influence decision-making process in the police


Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:
3) Understand, evaluate and apply aspects of communication theory and deliver appropriate and effective presentations to an audience


Personal Values Attributes (Global / Cultural awareness, Ethics, Curiosity) (PVA):

4) Examine why inter-personal conflict can occur within police and develop strategies to enhance individual and team performance

How will I be assessed?

Lecture, seminar and workshop activities will provide opportunities for formative assessment to the group.

Assessment A:
An individual Panopto recorded presentation with accompanying PowerPoint slides on Organisational Culture of no more than 15 minutes will be used to assess learning outcomes 3 and 4 (50%).

Assessment B: A substantive written piece of work (1,500 words) will evaluate the learning outcomes 1 and 2 (50%).

Module abstract

The resilience of any policing organisation depends how it operates and how it is perceived. This module examines factors that have affected police practice and perception in recent years including decision-making by the police organisation and by individual officers. In doing so, it covers abstract ideas -such as risk - as well as practical issues - such as how circumstances and culture can influence decision-making process, team work, communication.
