SP5007 - Research Design and Analysis

What will I learn on this module?

The module aims to equip you with the knowledge and skills for planning and carrying out an independent research project in sport and exercise science. The module will be structured in two blocks. Block one (weeks 1-6) will address different types of research design, their strengths and weaknesses and the associated analyses appropriate to those designs. Workshop sessions will cover how to carry out data analysis techniques in specialist software and how to present the results of these analyses according to convention. The topics that you will cover will include:
- Statistical assumptions and transforming data
- Correlation, regression, and multiple regression
- Between-group differences
- Power and sample size estimation
- Within-group differences
- Factorial designs
- Qualitative techniques
- Validity and reproducibility

Block two of the module (weeks 8-12) will be given to the design and completion of student-led, small-group research projects addressing given questions. In this block you will experience the research process first hand and undertake the design, conduct, analysis, and presentation of your research in the form of an individually-produced experimental report. This will include:

Identifying the rationale for your given research question from academic literature
- Choosing and describing an appropriate design for the research question
- Correctly applying and interpreting data analysis appropriate to the reseach question
- Presenting research-related activity in accordance with accepted convention
- Understanding ethical issues that apply to your research in sport and exercise sciences

In addition, the module aims to develop your appreciation of scientific rigour whilst considering and evaluating the limitations of data collection and data analysis methods.

How will I learn on this module?

The module will facilitate your learning through formal, but interactive lectures as well as practical-problem based workshops.

A problem-driven approach will be taken in block two whereby you will be given a research question before designing a method a data collection procedure, carrying out the data collection, and analysing and writing up the data that you have collected.

In the problem driven workshops of block one, you will learn how to carry out the appropriate statistical analysis of data from different types of research design. Staff will discuss common errors in research design, their impact on conclusions and how to control confounds common to different types of design.

During block one, attention will be drawn to the key features and limitations of various research designs, how to implement them properly, ethical considerations relevant to each question, assumptions underpinning the required analysis and accepted conventions for presentation of analyses.

The skills and knowledge acquired during the two blocks will provide the foundation for the Sport and Exercise Sciences / Sport and Exercise Science with Coaching Dissertation module at Level six.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

During the first week, you will be introduced to the module, and its administrative procedures and assessment requirements.

Support materials for sessions will be available to you on the eLP; including the lecture slides, suggested reading, access to journal articles and online materials, and other useful resources such as a discussion board. For further support on taught sessions you can access the tutors for one-to-one discussions and tutorials via the online tutorial booking system.

Formative preparation for assessment(s) will be given via a lecture by the module leader and end-of-module troubleshooting workshops.

Written feedback will be provided for summative assessment. A generic feedback session will take place for assessment(s), and generic feedback from previous years will also be made available on the eLP.

There is also comprehensive help available in the university library on a wide range of generic academic topics such as: academic writing, statistics, report writing and referencing.

How will I be assessed?

At the end of semester two, you will be required to complete an individually-written research report that comprises an evidence-based rationale, methods, results and discussion of the small-group research project undertaken in block two of the module. This is designed to assess your ability to conceive and design a research study underpinned by theoretical knowledge of research design and data analysis techniques, and to present and discuss the findings according to scientific conventions .

Summative assessment will receive written feedback.

Module abstract

Studying at university enables you to develop a new or better knowledge, but where does this knowledge originate? The primary means of producing and communicating new knowledge is via “the research process”. The module will will focus on exploring the research process in relation to Sport and Exercise Science. The module will guide you through designing, conducting, analysing and presenting your own research findings and prepare you for carrying out an independent research project in sport and exercise science. The module will provide both a theoretical and practical perspective on the research process, with a focus towards understanding the usefullness and limitations of research-generated information.
