What will I learn on this module?

On this module you will learn about the different approaches to leadership within the professional practice literature and how this can be applied to your own practice. You will be given time to assess your own leadership style and preferences.

This module will help you to develop and consolidate skills, attitudes and behaviours that you have developed throughout the programme. You will have the opportunity to become immersed in the culture of continuous improvement and invest in leadership development workshops. Alongside this you will explore metrics, measurements and improvement methodologies to enable developments in practice that will deliver measurable and sustainable outcomes. Developing practice is a contemporary role for all Graduate Nurses and it will be important for you to appreciate the variables at play in any attempt to lead and manage change.

On this module you will learn about the key components of practice development which include:
• Introduction to leadership and practice development
• Leadership
• Change theory and management for services
• PDSA cycle
• Culture and communication of change in practice
• Tools, techniques and metrics for practice
• Organisational collaboration and sustainability
• Practice leadership and role negotiation

This module will culminate in a summative assessment where you will be able to bring all this learning together and write a practice development proposal. This will be on a subject that you can chose for yourself. Guidance will be provided by academic staff.

How will I learn on this module?

The module will be delivered using a blended learning approach. This will incorporate the use of online resources and campus-based learning activities. You will learn by attending lectures, seminars and by undertaking online supported learning, tutor-guided study and independent learning. The strategies adopted during lectures and seminars will include provision of theory, interactive discussion and debate. You will also undertake individual and small group activities. The module team will lead lectures, facilitate seminars, prepare and monitor online-supported learning activities. You will be expected to undertake independent learning throughout the module. Your independent study will include reading, session preparation and post-session reflections. This will help you to identify and address ongoing learning needs, skills development and knowledge acquisition. The module team will provide advice on how and when to engage in your Tutor Guided and Independent Study. Tutor Guided materials will include interactive learning packages, electronic lectures, workbooks and media outputs.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

You will obtain support from direct dialogue with academic staff during lectures and seminars, both online and in country. You will utilise peer support during the directed study and independent study periods on the module. You will also have access to a discussion board on Blackboard Ultra, where you can post questions at any point during the module and beyond. This will be monitored regularly by a member of the module team. A group tutorial to support your summative assessment will be provided. You will have access to Northumbria University’s electronic resources to support the development of academic skills; this is aimed at improving your critical thinking and writing. These resources are aimed at improving your critical thinking, reading, and writing. The resources include e-books, e-journals and an array of databases and media outputs. You will be enrolled on Blackboard Ultra, that will provide access to module teaching materials and a reading list. You will be granted membership of the Northumbria University Library (https://library.northumbria.ac.uk/home) that includes a 24/7 service catering for all your learning needs. Library membership will also give you access to academic skills development packages, accessed on-line, called Skills Plus (https://library.northumbria.ac.uk/develop-learning-skills/learning-skills ). In addition, you can access Kaplan library and student support services locally.

Knowledge & Understanding:
1. To demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the key components in leading and developing practice.
2. Critically analyse the different approaches to leadership and how they can influence practice development.

Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:
3. Critically analyse and assess professional relationships to enhance collaboration and improve patient outcome, using reflexive and independent thinking.
4. Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the evidence base underpinning leading and developing practice and begin to apply them in practice.

Personal Values Attributes (Global / Cultural awareness, Ethics, Curiosity) (PVA)

5. Articulate a comprehensive understanding of your personal, ethical leadership values and attributes.

How will I be assessed?

Formative:
Identify an area of service improvement from your recent practice and then examine the key drivers behind it. How the improvement was implemented and how the service was monitored and measured.
Present the above to the group, using the PDSA cycle.
Formative peer and faculty feedback will be given. (MLO 1, 2, 3, 4 & 5)

Summative:
Identify a specific area of your practice that you would like to develop. Using current evidence, design a proposal for implementing the change in practice, including reflection on the role you will play and how any challenges will be addressed (1500 words). This will be submitted electronically via Blackboard Ultra.

Feedback and feed forward will be via Blackboard Ultra.

Module abstract

This module will focus on your transition to Graduate practice through a closer examination of the subject of leadership and practice development. You will assess your leadership style and draft a practice development proposal that reflects the real world of nursing practice.
Through your practice development proposal, you will understand the various stages of research, enquiry, project management and governance. You will be consolidating and advancing your knowledge, intellectual skills and abilities as well as your personal values.
This will ensure your responsiveness in relation to the ever-changing local, national and global health care landscape and the dynamic needs of people of all ages, families and communities. The module provides an exciting opportunity to facilitate the creativity and independent thinking that are central to professionalism. This will enhance your role transition and preparation for employability as a Graduate.
