What will I learn on this module?
This module is the second of two that prepares you to be highly employable by developing key hard and soft skills, which have been identified by current research as those necessary for postgraduate students seeking work. The development of the module has been underpinned by Bird and Osland’s (2003) Global Competency Framework and will provide you with two discrete skills sets - emotional and cultural intelligence (soft skills) and business intelligence (hard skills).
Business Intelligence:
In this strand of the module you will develop the practical skills and techniques required by businesses to help them in the project management and implementation of business intelligence and business analytics solutions. You will be introduced to some project management processes, tools and methodologies e.g. PMBOK and agile approaches. Such skills will be of great value to you in the workplace and will enhance your employability through developing practice based skills for the contemporary manager, thus emphasising the programme philosophy of ‘learning by doing’. A prominent theme throughout this module, similar to the module in semester 1 is to give you experience in a wide range of industry standard tools and technologies. To that end, most of the teaching plan will involve weekly workshop / seminar classes rather than formal lectures, although there will be some supporting lectures. In addition to being able to provide clear, critical, analysis of data, you will also be able to consider the project implementation skills needs.
Emotional and Cultural Intelligence:
This strand of the module is designed to help you understand key issues and challenges in relation to your employability prospects in the context of your target profession/industry/sector. A particular focus of this strand will be the impact of emotional intelligence, cultural intelligence and self-awareness for your employability as postgraduates. This will include the development of knowledge into the global graduate labour market (including routes such as self-employment and developing your career with an existing employer), drawing upon local, national and international exemplars. A key learning vehicle for this strand of the module is interactive seminars/workshops where you will undertake a number of activities to enable you to build on your self-analysis from Developing Global Management Competencies I and explore further their strengths, weaknesses and areas for further development in the context of your career development plans. You will also receive guidance on how to craft professional, postgraduate CVs, LinkedIn profiles supporting documentation to meet the needs of employers, building on your NX0475 activities and development. Detailed directed reading, diagnostics and interactive exercises will be undertaken which are contextualised to the country of study and/or intended employment, representing the specific needs of our diverse student body.
How will I learn on this module?
You will be supported with a teaching and learning plan for each strand of the module, which outlines the formal sessions together with tutor-directed study and independent reading.
In the BI strand emphasis is placed on the development of practical skills to aid employability in the workplace and classes will therefore be predominantly focused around ‘hands-on’ workshops. These will be of 2 hours in length and will include a short briefing at the beginning of each session as well as reflective discussion and enhancement checkpoints throughout the class. The workshops will include the practical development of project planning documentation, business cases and agile IT projects. In addition to this, there will be lectures at appropriate points in the teaching schedule for introduction to new topics. It is hoped that some of these lecture slots will be informed by involving guest lecturers / practitioners from industry.
With regard to the E&CI strand of this module, the method of delivery will focus upon experiential learning to facilitate consolidation and structuring of prior theoretical and conceptual understanding gained on Developing Global Management Competencies I. You will engage with a blended delivery pattern of 1 hour lectures and 2-3 hour interactive seminars.
Directed learning will centre upon a range of activities including pre-reading, preparation for interactive activities and use of the discussion board on the e-learning platform.
How will I be supported academically on this module?
The university is well-placed to support you in learning and research with excellent library and teaching facilities, as well as access to any relevant analytic software and tools. You will be supported by additional Blackboard materials and access to the University’s library and databases.
Academic content and delivery will be enhanced through opportunity for guest practitioner expert input.
In addition, you will be supported at a programme level by an induction programme to introduce you to the University and the Masters’ programme. Each of you will also be assigned a personal tutor to provide pastoral support and guidance throughout the programme. Further support is provided to you through the Academic and Professional Development module, summative and formative feedback, and a module teaching and learning plan detailing the delivery structure and University requirements.

How will I be assessed?
Summative Assessment
The module will be assessed by three summative assignments. One assignment is group based and two are individually based. Submission and feedback will be using Electronic Management of Assessment (EMA), except for presentations of course.
• Assignment A (50%)
Individual assignment consisting of a 2000 word essay consolidating your knowledge and understanding of challenges and issues facing your chosen profession/industry. Alongside your essay, you will submit a short video clip outlining how you will address these issues and challenges in your post-graduation role (identifying your strengths, weaknesses, and supported with evidence such as feedback from the module activities and psychometric test results) (E&CI strand). These will assess MLO3 and MLO4 [PLO 1.2]
• Assignment B (40%)
Group assessment which will involve teams delivering a presentation. This will address MLO1 and MLO2 [PLOs 3.1 & 3.2]
Assignment C (10%)
Individual Assignment: a 500-word report including a reflective statement on student’s individual view of their group’s progress with the case study and their summative presentation.

Formative Assessment
Formative assessments will take place regularly in the workshops and seminars, with students being asked to deliver presentations and demonstrations of the work being developed for the summative assessments. Formative feedback is provided by the tutors after the presentations for all students to take note of, learn from and aid preparation.

Module abstract
This module is core to all of the Masters programmes in the department of Business & Management (BM) and Accounting & Financial Management (AFM) except for MA Human Resource Management and Development. It seeks to provide students with some essential competencies (both hard & soft skills) required in the management of operations in a national and international context. It therefore seeks to enhance the employability prospects of students by developing project management and data analysis skills utilising a variety of management tools and software, as well as teamwork and communication skills.
