What will I learn on this module?
The hospitality industry has developed a critical role in the world economy and represents a major source of income for many developing countries. The industry is dynamic and is greatly influenced by many external factors that affect modern management practice. In this module, you will explore a number of relevant contemporary issues and opportunities facing international hospitality organisations and the impact of these issues and subsequent management responses.
The Module is delivered in themes; including managing resources, managing the experience, managing technology and sustainability. You will explore current and future concerns with topics such as, but not exclusively:
• changing nature of the hospitality workforce ;
• multicultural workforce;
• managing the experience;
• service quality and service recovery;
• the role of social media;
• introduction to environmentalism;
• new trends in hospitality eg pop-Up hospitality and consumer to consumer (C2C) provision;
• marketing and distribution strategies;
• loyalty and trust;
• the use of information and communication technology and hospitality.
A constant theme within this module the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to hospitality management in order to meet the challenges and opportunities explored in these issues.
How will I learn on this module?
ou will learn through lectures, seminars and independent learning. The lectures will cover the theories and concepts that will enable you to apply these to case studies and your own experiences.
The module is supported by a teaching and learning plan, which outlines the sessions, together with the tutor-directed study and independent reading. Seminars provide the opportunity to participate, both individually and within small groups or teams to apply theory to ‘real-life’ situations, critically analysing and making recommendations for appropriate ways forward for the organisation/individual.
Directed learning will centre upon a range of activities including pre-reading, preparation for interactive activities and use of the discussion board on the e-learning platform. Independent learning will centre upon you identifying and pursuing areas of interest in relation to the subject area or by providing deeper/broader knowledge and understanding of the subject through a range of learning activities that might include extended reading, reflection, research etc.
You will develop the necessary skills to identify, research and evaluate these issues and their implications for the hospitality sector as well as identify possible future.
Students will be encouraged to identify and research and debate contemporary issues which is a constant theme the importance of multidisciplinary approach.
How will I be supported academically on this module?
Support will be provided to you by a member of academic staff leading the module and a set of subject experts leading the lecture inputs on the specialist areas.
The eLP will house lecture and seminar materials relating to the module supported, where appropriate, various lecture recordings to support you in your independent study. These lecture recordings will include introduction to the module and preparation for assessment.
You will be provided with a wide-ranging electronic reading list that comprises of various academic reports, conference papers and journal articles that are pertinent to the key issues investigated in the module.
The module will be assessed by two individual assessments, a presentation and formal report. The presentation is in Pecha Kucha format and will achieve 25% of the module grade. This will not be marked anonymously. For those unfamiliar, it is a presentation in a 20x20 format: 20 slides, 20 seconds each, no exceptions. The intent of this strict 6 minute 40 second format is to focus your message, only give the necessary information, and end the monotony of typical PowerPoint sessions. The formal report is individually based on an submitted an application for funding for a company to develop the organisations capabilities and effectiveness.

What will I be expected to achieve?
Knowledge & Understanding:
• Examine the diverse range of contemporary issues facing hospitality organisations across the world. [MLO1]
• Critically analyse the nature, effects and implications of each key contemporary issue. [MLO2]
• Synthesised specialist knowledge to demonstrate management and operational responses to the contemporary issues. [MLO3]

How will I be assessed?
The module will be assessed by two assignments. One individual presentation and an individual report.
Assignment A (25%)
Individual presentation. The presentation is in Percha Kucha format (20 slides for 20 seconds) and will achieve 25% of the module grade. This will not be marked anonymously. This assesses MLO 1.
Assignment B (60%)
Individual report (3,000 words, 75% weighting): The final summative assessment will take the format of a formal report (an application for funding) and represents 75% of the module grade. This will be marked anonymously. This assesses MLO 2 and 3.

Module abstract
The hospitality and tourism industry is unique and complex and has developed a critical role in the world economy, and represents the main source of income for many developing countries. As the hospitality sector is one of the fastest growing sectors of the global economy there are a range of exciting careers in a variety of sectors including hotel management, licensed retail management, restaurant management, food and beverage management, entertainment and leisure, conference and events management and travel and tourism.
This module aims to provide students with an insight into contemporary issues facing international hospitality organisations. It provides a detailed examination of an extensive range of issues pertaining to the industry including the nature of the hospitality workforce, the changing patterns in supply and demand, distribution and the influence of the media, sustainability and emerging markets.
