What will I learn on this module?

All employers, regardless of size or sector face a number of ethical and legal considerations when employing people. Attending this module will continue your development as an HR professional by giving you the skills and knowledge to support employers to build on the minimum legal standards.

The key learning aspects of this module are twofold. First, you will learn the main Employment Law required for a career in Human Resources. You will then experience putting your learning into practice via simulations of real cases.

Knowledge of employment law and its practical application underpins various careers in Human Resources. Whichever path you choose, you are likely to be required to understand how Employment Law applies to your field and to be able to interpret it based on different scenarios.

Via this module you will experience all the key areas in which a HR professional will be expected to apply their knowledge of employment law including disciplinary, grievance, absence and equality and diversity. These areas include:

• How employment law is created
• Sourcing reliable information regarding employment law
• Ensuring policy and procedure is compliant
• Equality and diversity legislation and its impact on the workplace
• Legislation and case law regarding grievance, capability and disciplinary
• Legislation and case law regarding absence management
• The legalities of data protection
On completing the module you will be able to demonstrate practical skills which will support your employability for a wide range of roles.

In addition, the skills you will gain on this module, in analytical techniques and problem solving, will serve you well in Human Resources as well as other disciplines.

How will I learn on this module?

This module has been designed to engage you via a variety of learning environments. As part of this module you will:

• Increase your knowledge via lectures from practitioners experienced in Employment Law and its application;
• Undertake seminar based research preparing your response to practical case studies using Northumbria University state of the art resources.
• Interpret employment law and simulate your response in model workplace scenarios
• Gain an understanding of how Employment Law cases are handled in real life by visiting a live tribunal and/or hearing from Employment Law professionals.

You will be assessed via an exam at the end of the module consisting of four case study based questions. You will be able to practice this format at a mock exam during week 8.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

You will be supported by a module team who are qualified and have a wealth of experienced in Employment Law.

You will interact with your module tutor during the seminar activities, where you can also obtain their feedback on your case analysis. This will support you in acquiring the skills you will need for the module assessment. Seminars will also give you the chance to work in groups to pool resources and skills to meet agreed group goals.

As well as face to face support you will have access to a range of help and guidance outside the formal sessions with access to the module’s discussion board, the University’s eLearning Portal and digital reading list.

What will I be expected to achieve?

Knowledge & Understanding:
• You will understand how employers contextualise key employment law legislation to support day to day business activity. (MLO1)

• You will understand the changing nature of the law and need to stay up to date and ensure that research is conducted using the latest resources. (MLO2)

Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:
• You will develop the skills needed to able to advise organizations and managers to develop key human resource policy and procedures which to support employers to build on the minimum legal standards. (MLO3)

Personal Values Attributes (Global / Cultural awareness, Ethics, Curiosity) (PVA):
• You will be explicitly required to consider the ethical considerations employers should take into account of in order to exceed minimum legal requirements. (MLO4)

How will I be assessed?

You will be given feedback on your progress throughout the module. Ongoing face to face feedback will be given during the ‘hands on’ seminar activities and more formalised written feedback will be given on a mock assessment which takes place in week 9 of provision.

Your summative assessment for this module is a two hour, open book exam during which you will be asked to review four case study type questions. Each question is worth 25% of your final grade for the module. Each of the case study questions will be based on an element of employment law you and your peers have researched in seminar sessions.

All four MLOs will be addressed in the summative assessment.

Module abstract

Employment law impacts on all workplaces large or small and having trained, competent HR professionals who can help to develop policies and procedures building on the minimum legal standards is vital for any successful organisation. By attending this module you will develop an understanding of employment law and using practical, hands on, research based sessions develop theory into practice. Working with the support of both teaching staff and your peers you will explore in detail the balancing act between the ethical and practical considerations all employers face when dealing with such HR topics as; equality, diversity, disciplinary, grievance, capability and data protection. The analytical, practical and interpretative skills you will develop on this module are directly transferable to your working life.
