What will I learn on this module?
This module aims to develop your critical knowledge and understanding of how HRM can add value and enhance organisational effectiveness and sustainability, by exploring the effective integration of HRM with broader business and HR strategies, in order to facilitate the achievement of organisations strategic objectives.
You will be able to identify strategies for managing the shared and divergent interests of key stakeholders in HRM and understand how HRM can add value to individual and organisational objectives.
You will learn about a number of contemporary themes related to Human Resource Management in practice. These include:
Introduction to HRM as an ‘ideal ‘type
HRM and the labour market
Talent Management
Talent Development
Employer Branding
Flexibility and Job design
The new employee
International HRM
Employee Relations
Line Managers
Emerging Issues.
How will I learn on this module?
An interactive approach to lecture sessions will draw upon the directed learning undertaken and participants’ own experiences. Throughout, the emphasis will be on high levels of participation, both individually and within small groups or teams. Participants can therefore expect the reflective-practitioner approach in the form of feedback and learning to be embedded in all workshop/seminar sessions through undertaking activities which facilitate them to apply theory to ‘real-life’ situations, critically analysing and making recommendations for appropriate ways forward for the organization/individual.
The module will therefore enable you to consider, evaluate, analyse, and apply a set of principles, values and approaches to people leadership and management that firstly minimise and/or eliminate the barriers that typically inhibit performance and secondly mobilise the energies of people in ways that enable them to maximise their added-value contribution to both their own development and corporate goals.
How will I be supported academically on this module?
The module is supported by a teaching and learning plan which outlines the formal sessions, together with the tutor-directed study and independent reading. Support will be provided to you by a member of academic staff leading the module and potentially one or two subject experts leading the inputs on Human Resource Management and the implications of this on practice.
The module will have its own Blackboard site comprising various lecture and seminar material, whilst an electronic reading list will comprise various contemporary inputs covering text books (including a core text) and journal articles.
What will I be expected to read on this module?
All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. The reading list for this module can be found at: http://readinglists.northumbria.ac.uk
(Reading List service online guide for academic staff this containing contact details for the Reading List team – http://library.northumbria.ac.uk/readinglists)
What will I be expected to achieve?
Knowledge & Understanding:
• To develop a critical understanding of the way in which HRM processes and policies contribute to achieving organisational capability and goals. [MLO1]
• To mobilise the energies of people at work in ways that enable them to maximise their added-value contribution to both their own development and corporate goals. [MLO2]
• Demonstrated an understanding of contemporary research within the OHRM subject area. [MLO3]
Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:
•
Personal Values Attributes (Global / Cultural awareness, Ethics, Curiosity) (PVA):
How will I be assessed?
Summative assessment comprises a practical assignment in which students will apply their learning to demonstrate critical analysis, applying current theoretical and applied perspectives in HRM to practice related issues and put forward reasoned recommendations to improve and enhance current organisational practice, when appropriate. This is in the form of a 3000-word assignment accounting for 80% of the module marks and covering MLOs 1-3 and an unseen short test (20%) delivered between weeks 7-10 covering MLO1.
Formative assessment will take place through group work, assignment discussion and reflection, discussion board activity on the e-learning platform, case study activity, and theory/practice related discussions.
Criteria will be provided to enable you to understand what is expected of them and how they will be assessed on their performance. You are required to demonstrate self-reflection and reflective practice where appropriate.
