What will I learn on this module?
The module aims to provide you with the knowledge and skills of managing information in organisations in order to gain an in-depth understanding of business decision making. The module is delivered to you using weekly lectures and a combination of seminars/IT workshops. The workshops principally concentrate on the development of an access database and will enable you to design a small information system. The seminars will encourage you to work in small teams analysing different real life case studies.
Within this module, you will cover the following main topics:
• Files and databases
• System Analysis
• Systems Design versus Systems Acquisition
• Implementing information systems
• Business Intelligence
• Enterprise information systems
• e-Business systems
• Social Media
• Managing IS
• Global issues in Information Management
The module will lead you to a better understanding of Information Management in a business context. In doing so, it will expose you to a wide range of IS methodologies used for the development of IS applications as well as provide you with the knowledge of how IS are used by organisations in order to manage their information. Furthermore, you will gain an understanding of the role of MS Access Database as an aid to data management in businesses.
On completing the module you will be able to understand the issues involved in the Management of Information. You will have developed relevant IT skills to support the theoretical material introduced throughout the module. The one hour weekly lectures will provide you with a theoretical underpinning of the module content, supported by 6 two hours seminars and 6 two hours IT workshops, will give you an opportunity to practice the various analytical techniques, allowing you to build up a proficiency in the use of Access Database.
There will be a number of additional exercises housed on the module’s e-learning portal that will permit you to undertake further practice independently. The module has a supporting reading list that provides you with an opportunity to see how the various IS applications are used across different organisations.
Your directed study will support the work you have undertaken in the contact sessions. You will be expected to keep up-to-date with your workshop and seminar exercises/activities. Independent learning time is set aside for learning activities, self-identified by you, to gain a deeper and broader knowledge of the subject. The practical nature of the workshops and seminars means that tutor (formative) feedback will be received continuously.

You will be provided with a wide-ranging electronic reading list that comprises of various academic reports, conference papers and journal articles that showcase the management of information in organisations.
