Start your journey to a world-class medical degree and gain a global perspective on medicine.

Thanks to an international partnership with St. George’s University of Grenada School of Medicine (SGU), we are proud to provide the opportunity for you to earn a Doctor of Medicine (MD) and complete up to two years of your degree here at Northumbria University in Newcastle.

The Five Year Doctor of Medicine programme (MD5) is suitable for students who have completed their High School education with strong performance in science subjects. On this programme you will study for two years in Newcastle. Your first year of study with focus on pre-clinical studies followed by a second year of basic sciences.  After two years you will progress to the second year of basic sciences training at the SGU True Blue campus in Grenada. Upon completion of the second year of basic sciences students who satisfy the necessary requirements will be granted a Bachelor of Medical Sciences (BMedSci) award from Northumbria University. You will then have the option of completing two years of clinical rotations in the USA, Canada or the UK. The Doctor of Medicine (MD) award will be granted upon successful completion of the programme.

The SGU/NU International Medical Pathway has been designed to develop knowledge, clinical skills, and research interests while giving you the opportunity to experience a multitude of healthcare systems and enable you to practice medicine across all specialties with a global perspective. The programmes offered in Newcastle are equivalent to those delivered in Grenada but give students the opportunity to study in and experience a different healthcare environment.

As an established world leader in medical education for more than forty years, St. George’s University has contributed over 17,000 physicians to the global physician workforce with students, graduates and faculty from over 140 countries.

The Doctor of Medicine (MD) program at SGU opens doors for a medical career on an international scale, having been accredited and/or approved by many external regulatory and accrediting bodies. The accreditation standards that have been used to accredit the SGU medical degree program have been deemed comparable to those used by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education, the organization that accredits US and Canadian medical schools.

Can students from UK Foundation programmes join SGU programmes?

Students who have completed a UK Foundation programme may be eligible to join the Five Year Doctor of Medicine programme (MD5) where their Foundation programme has a sufficient level of science and students are able to demonstrate academic progression (i.e. their Foundation programme is at a lower academic level than the SGU programme they want to study). However, international students on a tier 4 visa can only spend two years in the UK studying programmes below degree level. Time spent on the Foundation programme will count towards the overall visa time limit. Students who join MD5 from a UK Foundation programme would generally only be able to study for one year in Newcastle before progressing to the SGU True Blue campus in Grenada to complete their studies..

You will learn through lectures, laboratory classes, early patient contact and small group work. These class activities will enable you to critically appraise the disciplines that encompass both the science and art of medicine.

In 2018, St. George's University's US and Canadian students achieved a 96% first-time pass rate on the USMLE step 1.

Some classes are facilitated by junior doctors, with groups of 6-8 students to 1 doctor. This ensures you are provided with expert one-to-one tuition throughout your studies. Classes will be clinically focussed, and based on clinical cases, practice examinations and real medical history.

Due to the ever developing nature of medicine, our modern teaching is evidence based. Staff on the SGU-UK programme are consistently are the forefront of cutting-edge medical practice, and therefore ensure our teaching is constantly evolving alongside new treatment methods and diagnostics.

Students in the 5-year program will spend 1 year in preclinical, 1 year in basic sciences and may do 6 months of clinical rotations in the UK. Students in the 4 year program will spend 1 year in basic sciences and up to one year in the UK. Clinical rotations may not be done in the UK for the last six months of year four/five.

You will be based at our City Campus in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. The University has invested more than £250 million in its estate over the last decade and our campus is continuously evolving to create an environment where you can shape your future.

All students enrolled on the programme will live together at the Trinity Square accommodation in Gateshead.  A twenty-minute walk or quick Metro ride from our City Campus.

St. George’s University’s network of over 16,000 School of Medicine graduates have practiced in all 50 US States and more than 50 countries around the world.

St George’s campus in Grenada is located on the South-West tip of the island in the Caribbean True Blue Campus. The campus is always expanding to keep up with the latest technologies and to provide students with the best learning environment.

Upon successful completion of the SGU-UK programme here at Northumbria, you will be prepared to continue your studies at St George’s University Grenada. Beyond your time in Newcastle, you will be exposed to a variety of experiences working within different healthcare systems, which will enable you to practice medicine across all specialities with a global perspective.

SGU is the #1 international provider of physicians practicing in the US—more than any other non-US medical school in the world.*

Students of St George’s University who took the USMLE 1 for the first time in 2018 achieved a 96% pass rate, including a 96% pass rate for students from the United States and Canada. More than 1,200 SGU students taking the exam for the first time hailed from 49 countries over 5 continents.
