What will I learn on this module?

In fluid mechanics you will learn about the fundamentals of fluid behaviour, density, pressure, viscosity, laminar and turbulent flow, hydrostatics, floating structures, the interaction of fluids with solid bodies and fluid flow in pipes. In soil mechanics you will learn about the composition of soils, their strength, stress-strain behaviour and modes of failure and the compression and consolidation of soils under short and long term loading. You will also learn about liquid flows through soils and its link to soil strength and behaviour.

How will I learn on this module?

The module will be delivered using lectures, seminars, supervised workshops and laboratory experiments. Fundamentals of fluid mechanics and soil mechanics are studied in the lecture periods, followed by the application of these principles in seminars through problem solving by means of worked examples designed to develop your understanding. You will also work in small groups directly participating in laboratory experiments designed to further develop an understanding of the fundamentals and their application. An awareness of health & safety and risk will be developed during the laboratories. You will learn appropriate conduct when undertaking a laboratory experiment and have knowledge of and an ability to apply the processes involved in laboratory risk assessment. You will be directed to sources in the library and use text books to reinforce class work, revising and re-visiting questions and worked examples carried out in class.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

You will be supported academically by the module teaching staff. The technical areas of the syllabus will be lecture led, with seminar time for additional support. Staff will also be present during laboratory classes. The eLearning portal will be used to upload lecture materials and additional reading prior to the lecture, thus allowing you to read ahead, prior to your class time. Additional reading materials will be provided to support the delivery of the module and enhance the range of information that is made available.

How will I be assessed?

MLOs 1 and 2 will be assessed by separate exams

MLOs 3 and 4 will be assessed by a Coursework consisting of a portfolio of laboratory reports.

Additional formative assessment: seminar sessions will explore targeted areas of learning (e.g. MLOs 1 and 2) and respond to topics prioritized by the students themselves to support their progression through the module.

Coursework feedback will be provided via the module electronic portal site through generic consideration of student work, highlighting those areas that were successfully and not so successfully considered to inform future collaborative submissions. Individual feedback will be provided to coursework submissions to clarify points of learning that have not been fully assimilated.

Module abstract

In this module you will learn the fundamentals of the behaviour of fluids and of soils, enabling you to describe their behaviour under various different conditions and describe it using mathematical concepts. Many civil engineering projects require an understanding of fluid mechanics – for example water supply and waste water systems, river, coastal and offshore engineering projects require you to understand the behaviour of static and moving water, while other projects require the consideration of wind loading on structures. Further, almost all civil engineering projects involve soil mechanics, since they have foundations built on soil or use soil as a construction material in excavations, embankments and similar structures.
