What will I learn on this module?

In this module, you will learn about structural testing methods and how to validate the results of finite element applications software for structural analysis and design. You also will learn theory of finite element method, its extended application to the consideration of dynamic problems and behaviour of dynamic structural systems. This module provides a solid foundation in structural testing, computer modelling and the finite element method in particular. Students benefit from our state of the art facilities, including comprehensive laboratories for structures and IT workshops.

How will I learn on this module?

You will learn through a combination of lectures, seminars and workshops to promote deeper understanding within an applied context. Lectures will formally introduce and present theories, concepts and applications. In most cases, the presentation of theoretical concepts will be extended to include practical examples and case study situations. Seminars will encourage small group-based, student-led exercises, which may include student presentations and discussion forums to develop and consolidate understanding. The workshops will include IT sessions to develop your finite element skills and your ability to use a commercial software tool to generate and analyse some civil engineering structures and laboratory sessions on structural testing. Opportunities to visit appropriate buildings in occupation and under construction will also be explored in order to demonstrate appropriate technological application.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

You will be academically supported on this module by dedicated and experience teaching staff who will be happy to answer any questions that you have and to provide you with verbal feedback at regular intervals. The small group sessions are ideal environments to ask about and discuss ideas or concepts that you have seen or read about. Additionally, the University’s eLearning platform will be used to allow you access to the module learning materials and to provide links to further reading or viewing. It will accommodate many electronically-based learning resources that will enhance your learning experience, development and understanding of single-storey, wide-span and multi-storey framed building technologies. Directed learning will be defined as: videos that are available in the resource area or YouTube; web sites that will provide up-to-date information on legislation, products, etc.; some selected textbook directed reading assignments; direction to magazine articles and relevant media coverage; revision topics for the summative assessments; the use of library e-Learning materials.

What will I be expected to achieve?

Knowledge & Understanding:
1. Critically approximate structural engineering systems using FEA.
2. Synthesise and apply the stiffness matrix to dynamic problems in structural engineering.

How will I be assessed?

You will be formally assessed by examination and coursework:

Coursework: a computer modelling report where you demonstrate the use of FEA software and validate it with testing results. This will assess MLO’s 1, 2, 3 and 4.

An exam assessment will require you to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of various theories that underlie vibration and finite element methods. This will enable you to satisfy MLO’s 1, 3, 4.

In order to support you in learning and preparing for the marked assessments as well as helping you to improve your overall learning skills, you will receive guidance through questioning and discussion with the tutors during your classes. This will assist you in reflecting on what you are learning and in feeding forward to the assessments.

Module abstract

You will learn about structural testing, computer modelling and the theory of finite element method, as well as its extended application to the consideration of dynamic problems in structural engineering. This module will be delivered through lectures supported by seminars and IT and laboratory workshops. Assessment includes one coursework consisting of a report of the application of finite element analysis to a structural problem and its validation using structural testing. There is also an examination. Feedback will provided both verbally and via the module electronic portal site through generic consideration of the student work.
